The rapid development of China's economy has in many ways been an environmental disaster.

solar energy in from the cold.
To date, solar energy has not been cost-effective for most building projects. Solar energy
systems are just too expensive to install, in part because of __17__demand. But this may soon
change. In the coming decades, China has to __18__hundreds of millions of people moving from
the countryside to the cities, or from poor rural homes to modern western-style dwellings. And it

their accompanying strain on an already __19__environment. “
The answer for the Chinese is to push the use of sustainable energy forms like solar power.
Such a large-scale push will __20__result in the mass production of solar power components, and
thereby lower costs. Within 10 years many experts predict solar power will be as cheap as coal. And
with this development the world will have a lot more to thank China for than the cheap DVD

for the fact they cannot hear
Among those who are not familiar with signing, there are often a few 24 , two of which

In fact, there is no universal sign language; rather, more than 100 varieties exist, which means it is

nation. For example, people from england usually aren’t familiar with american sign language,
while deaf mexicans will be 26 when communicating with spaniards despite the fact people
from those pairs of countries speak english and spanish, respectively. Regarding grammar, it might
surprise people with 27 hearing that sign language actually uses grammatical rules. However,
they are not 28 to the ones used when speaking. For instance, there is no gesture for the be”
verb in american sign language. However, the pattern does generally 29 the subject-verb-object

If you want to turn a dull children’s party into an exciting, noisy, and wild celebration, then
introduce a piñata. A piñata is a container that is usually made of brightly decorated papier mâché or
cloth, but sometimes it is made of pottery. A piñata is filled with toys, candy, or other treats, and a
rope is used to suspend it from the ceiling. __31__Eventually, the piñata bursts open, and partygoers
scramble to get as many goodies as they can.
The history of the piñata is not entirely known. For many years, it was commonly believed that
piñatas originated in Spain. This likely occurred in the early part of the 14th century. Piñatas were
later introduced by the Spanish into Mexico in the late 16th century, and piñatas became a
much-loved tradition there. __32__ Many contemporary scholars believe the Chinese were
responsible for creating the first kind of piñata. __33__According to research, for the Chinese
people at that time, one of the fun activities during Chinese New Year was to hit a similar
container—which was shaped like an ox or a cow and was filled with various types of seeds—with
colored sticks to release the contents.
__34__ No matter who first came up with the idea, though, piñatas are always a big hit at any
party for children.
(A) All in all, the similarities between the traditions are undeniable.
(B) The reason is that some evidence suggests Marco Polo, an Italian who had been living in China,
brought the piñata back to Europe in the 13th century.
(C) In recent years, however, this explanation of the origin has been hotly disputed.
(D) Children attempt to release the assorted goodies inside the piñata by hitting it with a stick.

五、閱讀測驗(24%)
說明︰第35-46題,每題請根據各篇文章之文意,選出最適當的一個選項,標示於考
卷上之題號前。每題答對得2分,答錯不倒扣。
第 35~38 題為題組
If you have trouble believing the common theory that birds evolved from the dinosaurs, take a
look at the shoebill. When you see this ancient bird, it’s not hard to picture it being a relative of a
long-extinct beast from the Jurassic period. This tall, prehistoric-looking creature is certainly unique
in appearance. Its name is derived from an unusually large bill, which somewhat resembles a shoe.
This prominent feature can measure up to 24 centimeters, giving it the third-largest bill in the bird
world, with only pelicans and large storks possessing bigger ones. In fact, the shoebills huge beak,
combined with its long, thin legs, previously caused scientists to erroneously classify it as a stork.
The animal was later recategorized as being more closely related to pelicans than storks.
The enormity of the bird’s bill has led many to describe its appearance as goofy, but the
shoebill’s hunting behavior is anything but awkward. It is a stealthy predator, often feeding at night,
and patiently waiting in swamp water to lunge at creatures swimming by. These meals include
lungfish, baby alligators, frogs, and water snakes, among other aquatic life. The birds tend to hunt
in water that has a lower level of oxygen because such an environment forces the fish and other
animals in it to surface for air more often, making them easier targets for shoebills. A sharp hook at
the end of the bird’s bill aids the bird in killing its prey. Meanwhile, the shoebill’s feet are not
webbed; rather its feet feature large, individual toes, which allow it to support itself on underwater
vegetation.
Native to the swamps of central tropical Africa, shoebills can be found from Sudan to northern
Zambia. They are listed as vulnerable, which means they are likely to become endangered in the
future due to threats from habitat destruction and hunting. It has been estimated there are only
between 5,000 and 8,000 of these animals left in the world.
35. Why does the writer mention dinosaurs?
(A) To explain the shoebill’s name
(B) To support a scientific theory
(C) To demonstrate a mistake that scientists made
(D) To suggest shoebills existed before dinosaurs
36. Why are shoebills often in water with low oxygen levels?
(A) It’s easier for them to hunt.
(B) They need to drink a lot of water.
(C) Too much oxygen makes them sick.
(D) That is the most common type of water in Africa.
37. According to the passage, which of the following is true about shoebills?
(A) Shoebills were first believed to be a type of pelican
(B) When shoebills seek food, they show awkward behavior.
(C) Shoebills became extinct in part because of habitat loss.
(D) A feature of the shoebill’s bill helps it kill other animals.
38. Which of the following pictures best represents a shoebill?

第 39~42 題為題組
In 18th-century France, portrait painting was a highly regarded art, and Baron Joseph Ducreux,
born in Nancy, France in 1735, was one of the best portrait painters around. Ducreux worked in the
court of Louis XVI, and was able to continue his career even after the French Revolution
(1789-1799). In fact, Ducreux created the last portrait of Louis XVI before the king’s execution.
When Ducreux wasn’t working on official business, he enjoyed creating portraits that explored the
full range of facial expressions and the idea that you can judge someone’s personality based on their
face.
Ducreux was trained to be a painter from a very young age by his father, who was also an artist.
Ducruex’s first official job was painting a miniature of Marie Antoinette in Vienna shortly before
she married Louis XVI. In exchange, he was given his baron title and made “First Painter to the
Queen.” Ducreux rarely signed his paintings, though, and so many of his works before the French
Revolution have been falsely attributed to other artists. After the French Revolution, Ducreux began
experimenting with strange self-portraits. During this period, he produced the three paintings he is
best known for. Two of them are self-portraits. In one, Ducreux is in the middle of a large yawn. In
the other, he’s pointing and laughing at the viewer. The third painting of his that has become famous
is of a man looking at the viewer sternly with his finger to his mouth, as if to shush the viewer. All
of these portraits were done to break free of the rules and constraints of traditional portrait painting.
In them, Ducreux wanted to capture the personality of his subjects. These three paintings were
uncommon then and still stand out today.

39. Based on the passage, how can we describe Baron Joseph Ducreux?
(A) The greatest portrait painter of all time.
(B) A conservative artist that followed traditions.
(C) A talented painter who wasn’t appreciated in his time.
(D) An open-minded artist willing to explore new possibilities.
40. What is said about Ducreux’s painting career?
(A) He ceased painting portraits after the French Revolution.
(B) He rose to fame with a portrait of Marie Antoinette.
(C) He eventually became King Louis XVI’s right-hand man.
(D) He had a less successful artistic career than his father.
41. What is Ducreux most famous for today?
(A) His portraits of King Louis XVI.
(B) Paintings with laughing subjects.
(C) Portraits featuring unusual facial expressions.
(D) Some self-portraits that quite flatter him..
42. Which of the following statements is FALSE according to the passage?
(A) Ducreux supported the overthrow of King Louis XVI.
(B) Ducreux believed that a person’s face reflected their character.
(C) Ducreux’s father had a great influence on his career choice.
(D) Portrait painting was a respected profession in the 1700s.

第 43~46 題為題組

There are some things you just can't say in English. You can't, for example, say "I is going to
the store." Every native speaker agrees. But there are many points of usage where there are big
disagreements. We aren't talking about regionalisms, however, such as the way the British say "the
team are" while Americans say "the team is." We're talking about usages the majority of native
speakers consider natural, but the experts say are wrong.
Or do they? Experts in language usage are also divided over what is right and wrong. In brief
there are two camps: the descriptionists and the prescriptionists. The latter believe there are strict
rules of usage that people need to be formally taught, while the former believe that we should look
to how native speakers really use their language to determine what is standard.
At first glance the prescriptionists seem to have the better argument. After all, no one wants a
free for all in language; how would we communicate? But the descriptionists have their points, too.
Many of the so-called rules are regularly broken, even by rule book authors. What is the point, the
descriptionists say, of rules that everyone breaks? Why don't we just accept the way people really
use the language ?
Most prescriptionists, for example, will argue that "everybody" must be followed by a singular
pronoun such as "everybody must do his best." But most native speakers will say and even write,
"everybody must do their best." They do this either to avoid sounding sexist or to avoid the clumsy
repetition of "his or her."
So does this mean your teachers are wrong to insist you follow the rules? Not at all. The battle
between the descriptionists and the prescriptionists has not been decided in any side's favor, and a
good many of the most educated native speakers (who may be
your future teachers) are prescriptionists. If you're going to follow the hoi polloi and break the
rules, you'd better be aware that some important people in your life may judge you negatively for
doing so.
43. Which statement about prescriptionists is true?
(A) They insist the word "everyone" should be followed by a singular pronoun.
(B) They do not ask people to follow the rules of a language very strictly.
(C) They think a usage is correct if it is spoken by the majority of native speakers.
(D) They try to avoid sounding sexist when using their native language.
44. The phrases "the team is" and "the team are" _________
(A) are not considered acceptable by either descriptionists or prescriptionists
(B) are used interchangeably by all English-speaking people
(C) have something to do with the educational level of the users
(D) have something to do with where speakers come from
45. The descriptionists and the prescriptionists _________.
(A) are experts who do research on the influence language has on culture
(B) have different views about what is acceptable language usage
(C) take into consideration how the majority use the language
(D) do not break rules set by the other side
46. What's the main idea of the passage?
(A) People should be more creative when using their native languages.
(B) What is standard language usage depends on who is speaking.
(C) The descriptionists and the prescriptionists are seeking a set of rules that both side can
accept.
(D) Disagreement over what is proper language usage has not been settled yet.

第 47~49 題為題組
According to a recent research, about 3 quarters of Americans are consuming way too much an
addictive substance without knowing it. Among them, many can be diagnosed with having an
addiction—  sugar addiction, which often results from emotional or psychological dependence on
sweet foods and drinks. Such a health issue has also raised official concerns by the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services.
The intake of sugar can create a short-term high and a boost of energy in the body. People
often enjoy the pleasure from dopamine that sugar brings. On the other hand, sugar releases
endorphins in the body, combined with other chemicals, resulting in a surge of energy. People
with low moods, anxiety and stress are prone to risk of sugar addiction because of their craving for
sugar to get excitement and energy. Also, people suffering constant tiredness may reach for
carbonhydrate-rich sugary foods for a boost. Once someone mentally connects sugar with energy
boost, they may become dependent on it. Meanwhile, people may begin to crave sugar to balance
anxiety, emotional lows, and other conditions. Eventually, there is little control over consumption of
sugary foods, and a sugar addiction has developed.
The clearest signs of sugar addiction involve consumption of large amounts of sugary foods
and drinks. Other indications of sugar addiction are weight gain and difficulty focusing on daily
responsibilities. This can damage self-esteem, cause feelings of helplessness, and lower
self-worth, which in turn leads to more sugar consumption and a more severe addiction. Although
sugar initially boosts serotonin levels in the brain and help regulate mood and social behavior,
appetite and digestion, sleep, memory, and other functions, sugar can worsen anxiety as sugar lows
create feelings of fatigue and depression.
Speaking of quitting sugar, many find themselves experiencing withdrawal symptoms of
irritability, moodiness, and low energy. Since many struggling with sugar addiction tend to binge on
sugary foods, withdrawal symptoms and cravings can be intense. Tragically, many choose to go
back to eating sugary foods for the chemical release in the brain. A much better alternative is to
exchange unhealthy sweets for natural and healthy options to regain control.
Change begins with realizing there is a problem with one’s sugar addiction. Modifying one’s
diet as well as self-control can help, but going cold turkey isn’t ideal. The withdrawal from an
addictive substance will be better with cutting down gradually. If you or someone you know has a
sugar addiction, especially if complicating factors are present, contact a treatment specialist today to
find out more about your options.
47. In the fourth paragraph, it mentioned that many choose to go back to eating sugary foods for the
chemical release in the brain. What are the chemicals and why do people depend on them?
Please fill in the number from the passage to answer the questions.
