PART – I : PHYSICS
SECTION-I : (Maximum Marks: 24)
• This section contains EIGHT (08) questions. The answer to each question is a NUMERICAL VALUE.
• The answer to each question is NUMERICAL VALUE with two digit integer and decimal upto two
digit. (e.g if your answers are 0, 3, 0.3, 3.2 & 32 then write your answer 00.00, 03.00, 00.30, 03.20
& 32.00 respectively)
• Answer to each question will be evaluated according to the following marking scheme:
Full Marks : +3 If ONLY the correct numerical value is entered.
Zero Marks : 0 In all other cases.
1. A mirror is mounted on a stand as shown. The mirror has negligible mass. On the other side,
massless arrow is mounted. The natural length of the spring is 1m. The whole system is on
frictionless surface. The two bodies are pulled out such that spring is extended by 10 cm and
released. What is the maximum velocity (in m/s) of the image of the arrow as seen by a person on
the ground?
2. A hollow glass sphere of inner radius 5 cm & outer radius 10 cm is viewed as shown in figure. If
refractive index of glass is 3/2, find distance (in cm) between A & O as seen by the observer?
3. A particle of mass 5 × 10–5 kg is placed at the lowest point of a smooth parabola having the
equation 20x2 = y (x, y in m). Here y is the vertical height. If it is displaced slightly and it is
constrained to move along the parabola, find the angular frequency (in rad/s) of small oscillations.
4. At a smooth horizontal table are two identical cubes of mass m, connected by a spring of rigidity
k. The length of spring in the unstretched state is 0. The right cube is linked to the load mass m
at the end. At some time the system is released and the system moves without initial velocity.
Find the maximum distance (in cm) between blocks during the motion of the system.
[0 = 1 cm, m = 3 kg, k = 1000 N/m]
7. A ray of light enters a rectangular glass slab of refractive index 3 at an angle of incidence 60°.
It travels a distance of 5 cm inside the slab and emerges out of the slab. Find out the perpendicular
distance (in cm) between the incident and the emergent ray.
8. A mass m is resting at equilibrium suspended from a vertical spring of natural length L and spring
constant k inside a box as shown:
The box begins accelerating upward with acceleration a. Find the maximum speed of the mass (in
cm/s) relative to the box in subsequent motion. (Given: a = 1 m/s2, m = 3kg, k = 1200 N/m)
9. A convex mirror and a concave mirror are placed on the same optic axis, separated by distance
L = 20 cm. The radius of curvature of each mirror has a magnitude of 12 cm. A light source is
located at a distance x from the concave mirror as shown in figure.
(A) The rays from the source return to the source after reflecting first from the convex mirror and
then from the concave mirror for x = 8 cm.
(B) The rays from the source return to the source after reflecting first from the convex mirror and
then from the concave mirror for x = 16 cm.
(C) If the rays from the source return to the source after first reflecting from the concave mirror
and then from the convex mirror for x = 8 cm.
(D) If the rays from the source return to the source after first reflecting from the concave mirror
and then from the convex mirror for x = 16 cm.
10. A torsional pendulum consists of two identical rods each of mass M & length joined perpendicular
to each other in horizontal plane and is hanged through the wire having torsional constant C. The
system performs simple harmonic motion = Asin(t + ) such that initially angular displacement
of the system is equal to half of amplitude and its angular velocity is 0 and is decreasing, then:
M 2 2M
(A) Time period of pendulum is T = 2 (B) Amplitude of oscillation is 0
6C 3 C
7 M 202
(C) Initial phase of SHM is or (D) Energy stored in wire at t = 0 is
6 6 36
12. A particle slides back and forth between two inclined frictionless planes joined smoothly at the
bottom as shown in figure. The particle:
13. The rectangular box is the place of a spherical mirror. The point S is the position of an object and
the point I is the position of its image. The height of the point S from the axis is two times that of
point I. The horizontal separation between S and I is equal to 15 cm.
14. If the figure shown, the mass of the disc as well as that of the trolley is M. The spring is ideal and
has stiffness k. The trolley can move horizontally on the floor without friction, and the disc can
roll on the trolley surface without slipping. The spring is compressed and the system released so
that oscillations begin. At the instant of release, magnitude of:
15. In the figure shown, a block of mass m is rigidly attached to two identical springs of stiffness k
each with other ends of the springs connected to the fixed walls. When the block is in equilibrium,
length of each spring is b, which is greater than the natural length C of the spring. The time period
of the oscillation of the block if it is displaced by small distance x perpendicular to the length of
the spring and released (motion of the block is unaffected from gravity) is:
mb mb m(b − ) m(b − )
(A) 2 (B) 2 (C) (D) 2
k(b − ) 2k(b − ) kb 2kb
16. An insect of negligible mass is sitting on a block of mass M, tied with a spring of force constant K.
The block performs simple harmonic motion with amplitude A infront of a plane mirror placed as
shown. The maximum speed of insect relative to its image will be
K A K K M
(A) A (B) (C) A 2 (D) A
M 2 M M K
17. Two blocks each of mass m lie on a smooth table. They are attached to two other masses as
shown in the figure. The pulleys and strings are light. An object O is kept at rest on the table. The
sides AB & CD of the two blocks are made reflecting. The acceleration of two images formed in
those two reflecting surfaces w.r.t. each other is:
18. Block A is hanging from a vertical spring and is at rest. Block B strikes the block A with velocity v
and sticks to it. Then the value of v for which the spring just attains natural length is
