INSTRUCTION: Solve the following problems. Show your solutions. If the answer is not exact,
round it to the nearest 2 decimal places.

MODULE No. 1 – QUIZ 1

PART 1: ANALYSIS OF BEAMS

QUESTION 1. Given the simple beam ABC,
determine the reaction at the hinge A and at the
roller at C. Take X = 15 + (highest digit of your
student number) and Y = -15 + 5(average of
the nonzero digit of your student number).

QUESTION 2. Given the cantilever beam,

determine the reaction at the fixed support A.
Take M = 3 + (second highest digit of your
student number), D = 25 + 3(average of the
nonzero digit of your student number to the
nearest whole number) and E = 25 +3(second
lowest digit of your student number).

PART 2: ANALYSIS OF FRAMES

QUESTION 1. Determine the reaction at
pins at A, B and C and fixed support at D.
Answer in component form. Take P = 5 +
0.5(third highest digit of your student
number).

QUESTION 2. Determine the reaction at pins

at A, B and C and fixed joints. Answer in
component form. Take w = 2 + 0.25(third
highest digit of your student number).

PART 3: ANALYSIS OF TRUSS

QUESTION 1. Determine the force on each member of the truss and state if the members are in
tension or compression. Set P1 =3*[third highest nonzero digit of your student number] lb and P2
= 3*[second lowest nonzero digit of your student number] lb.

QUESTION 2. Given the cantilever truss below, it carries the concentrated load as shown. If a
downward concentrated load whose value is the average of two given load is applied at joint D,
determine the force in each member of the truss and state if the members are in tension or
compression. Set P1 =1.5*[third highest nonzero digit of your student number] lb and P2 =
3*[second lowest nonzero digit of your student number] lb.
