ASSIGNMENT 1: CHALLENGE TO MONOTONALITY

Each of the following three pieces exhibits one of the three challenges to monotonality
described in the notes for this unit.

Please study each piece and write one short paragraph (3-5 sentences) for each piece
explaining which challenge best describes it and why. You should refer to specific
measure and to specific chord progressions and cadences.

A few hints have been given to help you get started.

Schubert, “Meeres Stille”

There is a LOT of evidence suggesting one particular key here. In fact, the key signature,
the opening chord, and the final cadence of the piece, all point toward the same key. But
is that the end of the story?

Wolf, “Herr, was trägt der Boden hier”

The song consists of three questions and three answers. Harmonic arrivals in mm. 10, 18,
and the end should lead you to the correct answer here regarding the type of challenge.

Schubert, “Der Alpenjager”

Quite a long song, but clear I think.
