Essay 16 Reflective Essay

Throughout the term, I have learned several Eastern philosophical thoughts from India, China

and Japan. Besides I have gained significant knowledge about ancient pre-historic and modern

day philosophies. My initial expectations as I started this course was to develop skill in

philosophical thinking and writing, comprehend the fundamental philosophical challenges in

Eastern thoughts, and understand some basic cultural and social situations that influenced the

emergence of Eastern philosophy. This course has significantly transformed my perception and

shaped a new thought concerning the Eastern Philosophy. Eastern Philosophy has similar

objective with Western philosophy of making people wiser, less agitated, thoughtful and ready to

accept our lives. However, encountering these Eastern philosophies was an amazing encounter.

These philosophies used different and unique approaches to teach lessons. For example, I ever

thought that life is all about happiness and joy. However, Buddhism through the noble truth of

the Buddha suggests that life is inevitably about suffering. The traditions and ideas that did not

resonate well with me from this course were Daoism and Jainism. I did not fathom their precepts

fully and I long to go back and learn more about them. I consider the course texts educative and

informative. However, the texts I have found important and knowledgeable are Bhagavada Gita

and Uchiyana’s Opening the Hand of Thought. These two are reflective analysis of the Asian

philosophies that provide more insightful perspectives. The voice thread lectures were helpful in

elucidating more insights to foster a clear understanding of these philosophies. Ideally, these

philosophies were hard to understand but with determination and concentration, I gained much

knowledge and insights.
