JOE SHUSTER'S GIRLFRIEND

One day a person is your entire world, the next day they leave and they become a stranger. And for
most of us, such people are at best just a memory. Unless, that is, you are an artist and you immortalize
them in a picture.

If you are familiar with the historical background of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, you may recall that at
one point, Shuster dated one of his earliest models named Jolan Kovacs. Kovacs, who modeled under
the name "Joanne Carter," eventually became Jerry Siegel's second wife years after she broke up with
Shuster.

But shed no tears for Joe. He moved on as well and he was introduced to another girl by his brother,
Frank. This girl was named Annette Greenberg, who was still attending John Hay High School at the
time.

The two dated steadily for a time, and apparently Joe thought to impress her with his drawing skill.

Although Shuster was already a professional artist working for the Wheeler-Nicholson comic company
in New York City, he contributed a cartoon to Greenberg's school newspaper, the JOHN HAY
LEDGER.

While the cartoon was ostensibly a commentary upon the rush students had to undergo when moving
between classes in the main school building and its annex, Shuster managed to include a shout-out to
Annette within it. She is shown as a blonde-haired girl in the lower right corner of the drawing.

Greenberg's reaction to her cartoon appearance isn't known, but it is known that the relationship didn't
last.

But perhaps if it had, Lois Lane may have ended up a blonde, just like her sister Lucy.
