Discrepant Event Report

Materials Needed:
 Gummy worms- 3
 Baking soda- 3 TBS
 Vinegar- 1 C
 Warm water- 1 C
 Cutting board
 Sharp knife
 2 clear cups
 Timer
Subjects:
 SOL K.3 (Matter)
Time required:
 30 minutes: prep, part one, wait period, part two, clean up
 Add extra time for discussions

Concepts:
 The concept behind the event, is that carbon dioxide bubbles are made when an
acid and a basic meet.
 The gummy worms can float due to all of the carbon dioxide bubbles made
through this process. Which in turn changes the physical properties of the
gummy worms from before to after the experiment.

Misconceptions:
 The gummy worms won’t change color (this can change by comparing gummy
worms before and afterwards.)
 It can work on whole gummy worms too (students can see what happens to a
whole gummy worm in the second solution.) The teacher can have this preset up
so students can see right away.

Questions:
- Setup:
o What do you think gummy worm will look like after being in the solutions?
How does the gummy worm feel in your hand? How heavy is it?
- During:
o How might the gummy worm’s looks change from the first to second
solution? What do you think will happen when we put the gummy worms
in the second solution? Does the gummy worm look bigger in the liquid?
- Follow up:
o Was your guess on how the gummy worm would look like correct? How
has the weight and feel of the gummy worm changed? What is one thing
that surprised you in the change of the gummy worm’s physical
properties?
