Course Syllabus
Winter 2023 Face-to-face and Online Delivery
In this second semester of a two-semester course in taxation, students are introduced to additional topics
including the nature and structure of the Income Tax Act, preparing corporate tax returns, tax planning for
corporations, corporate reorganizations, trusts and partnerships. An introduction to GST/HST laws and
international tax issues will also be included. The course is delivered face-to-face (with supplemental materials
posted online) and fully online. Students will find resources and tools to assist their learning, along with the
required course assignments on the course site in COTR Online. Required textbook readings, assignments,
exams and due dates are listed on the course schedule on the following pages.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK
Buckwold, Kitunen, Roman and Iqbal (2022). Canadian Income Taxation: Planning and Decision Making (With
Connect), 2022-2023 Edition. McGraw-Hill Ryerson Limited.
Note: The textbook companion website (Connect) will be used to complete many of the class assignments and
exams and registration and use of this website is required.
Following are the required quiz activities and exams and their contribution toward the final course grade. Missed
quiz activities, exams and late assignments receive a grade of zero.
Students will be required to complete various assignments throughout the semester. The breakdown of the
assignment grade is as follows:
Class Attendance: Students are strongly encouraged to regularly attend class, participate in class discussions
and are required to complete all assignments, activities and exams on the dates provided in this Course
Syllabus. Online students do not attend class but are required to watch the recordings of the class lectures that
will be posted on a weekly basis on COTR Online. Students who miss assignments and exams receive a grade
of zero for that assignment or exam. Students who are unable to write their exam on the scheduled date due to
illness are required to provide a doctor’s note accounting for the day(s) missed to the instructor within 7 days of
the missed exam. Assignments submitted late will be penalized at a loss of 20% per day and will not be
accepted after 3 days past the due date without first obtaining instructor permission.
Academic Honesty: All College and Department policies on academic honesty and plagiarism will be strictly
enforced and can be found on the Course site and the COTR site. You are responsible for reading and
understanding the policy. Please ask your instructor if in doubt or see the Reference Desk in the Library for
more information including proper referencing and citation techniques. Please use APA referencing and citation
methods. Failure to adhere to College policies can result in disciplinary action.
