Tuesday cover lesson work:

Exercise 2.15: Translate the unknown vocabularies and group them up in categories
1. Rendezvous: 约会,会面地点
2. Gadget: 小玩意儿,小器具
3. Temptation: 诱惑

Internet: technology, PC, phone, device, information, gadget

Communication and interaction: social engagement, connectivity, conversation
Downsides of technology: distraction, temptation, interruption
Public spaces: office, school, cab, rendezvous, prison
People: friend, driver, producer

Exercise 2.16: Use the words from Activity 2.15 to predict what you think Text 3.7 will be about. After
reading the article, come back to these predictions. Were you right or wrong in what you predicted?

According to the words in Activity 2.15, I predict the story in text 3.7 to be around the downsides of
using technology in a full explanation with a few evidences, I assume it involves some personal
stories and experiences of the writer using electrical device.

After reading Text 3.7, I realized the prediction I made was only partly correct because I failed to
guess the content of the text is around a person cutting off from the internet and his electrical
device, and he wrote his journey without any internet into a diary. So there’s a bit difference
between what I predicted and what Text 3.7 actually is.

Exercise 2.19
A) He stood up, stretched, and the played local-multiplayer video games in the office for a
couple hours.

B) The cab driver did not seem to find Paul Miller’s answer interesting towards his question of
asking why did Paul decide to live without internet. So their conversation ended there.

C) The author started to listen to records with his roommate after cutting off the use of
electrical devices. Compared to his habit of playing with his devices before, he has now
found himself really engaging in this moment, by asking questions and listening closely to
interact with his roommate.

D) Paul Miller works in the office. I assume that he works as a journalist or media reporter from
the given information in the text, “I heard something about a ‘BlackBerry 10’ and something
about Diet Coke that I plan on searching for in the next issue of my daily paper.” From the
word ‘daily paper’, I made a prediction about the author’s job as a journalist and this is one
of his work tasks that he has to do everyday.

E) Paul Miller had to field a bunch of calls the whole time when he was hanging out with his
friend from out of town while his friend’s phone is often off. Paul felt intimidated to have
someone to be that attentive to him.

F) In the days leading up to Paul Miller’s experiment. He received responses from the outside in
numbers describing his action to be described as ‘brave’, ‘insane’, ‘inspirational’, publicity
stunt’, ‘stupid’, ‘a waste of everyone’s time’ etc.

G) Paul Miller has not made a new schedule yet for himself of his life without the internet. He
does not know what the next days and weeks are going to look like. So he is going to just go
with the flow and just enjoy this journey. By referring to his words, ‘All I know is that so far I
am loving it.’
