Noman Chowdhury 19 April, 2016 12:00 AM The authorities of Bangladesh Agricultural University removed the chairman of a department from his post as he refused to award marks to copied thesis papers of some postgraduate students. Prof Anwar Hossain, head of farm structure and environmental engineering and chairman of exam committee, was removed as per section 13(3) of university ordinance, a provision a vice- chancellor can use at moments of crisis. The suspension of Prof Anwar came following complexities in tabulating and publishing results of the department, BAU registrar Saiful Islam told daily sun. “The vice-chancellor removed him on a temporary basis on April 3 exercising his powers for the sake of the continuation of the department's activities.” Prof Anwar, however, claimed he was removed because he identified copied theses and refrained from marking the papers." The process followed to remove me was illegal,” the aggrieved party said as he substantiated his claim. “The VC used section 13(3) to remove me, but it can only be used during a crisis. He even didn't serve a show-cause notice on me before my removal.” Talking to daily sun, a number of BAU teachers criticised such ‘indiscreet’ steps of the authorities taken against Anwar Hossain Prof Paresh Chandra Modak, a syndicate member, said punishing a teacher who identified plagiarism is not a wise decision, It has surprised the faculty. “The authorities must investigate the allegations of copied thesis papers.” He condemned the authorities for sacking Prof Anwar. “Through this action, the authorities concerned are endorsing such offence at Bangladesh Agriculture University.” It was leamt that Prof Anwar identified the theses of five students of postgraduate programme (July-December/2015 session) of his department as copied during their thesis defence exams in February and afterwards. He informed three other members of the committee, Prof Nurul Haq, Prof Ali Ashraf and Prof Siddiqur Rahman, of the matter, but to no avail. Rather, they did marking on the theses and submitted them to the authorities. Prof Anwar refrained from marking them on allegations of copying from a technical report published from the University of Massachusetts, a technical report of local Environment and [Sggjat Development Organisation and a postdoctoral report of Prof Khairul Islam from Guangd@hg University of China. UP Prof Anwar sent the thesis copies to the coordinator of a committee on higher education anc research for further enquiry, but it still sits on the papers “On March 31, VC Prof Akbar Hossain called me to his residence and asked me to mark the thesis. But | denied outright to do so and requested the VC to take legal action against the copyists," Prof Anwar told daily sun. Challenging his removal decision, Prof Anwar on April 6 filed a writ with Mymensingh judge's court and the court gave a stay order on the decision and asked the VC, registrar and Prof Abdur Rashid to show cause within 10 days. The respondents went to the court and sought time until May 5 for reply. Attempts were made over phone but the VC was not available for comments. 0 0 0 0 Like Give a rating: Leave a comment What is your opinion?
