- Which benefits give the lead (Pb) to the gasoline?

The lead was used as an additive to the gasoline. The combination results in tetraethyl
lead (CH3CH2)4Pb (abbreviated TEL).
This allowed a better engine compression and, therefore, a better performance.

- When did the TELs be discovered?

This petro-fuel additive was discovered by Thomas Midgley, the “father” of the CFCs.

- When did the TELs started to be produced?

TELs started to be produced in the 1920s by the company General Motors.

- Timeline of the TEL production.

It started to be banned by some countries in the 1970s, when almost all the worldwide
fuel had lead in it.
By 1980 the situation changed, most developed countries had banned it.
By 2002 at least 86 countries still use this kind of fuel.
The August 30 of 2021 the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) stated that
the end of the lead gasoline era.
- Are the TELs totally banned?
The answer is negative. In fact, the TELs are still used as fuel for general aviation
aircrafts.
