Module 1

The façade indulged by social media users into how one perceives oneself as to the images they
post on social media is a mask that more people, daily continue to wear. The extract to be discussed is
an article adapted from a website written by Abigail Fagan whose purpose is to highlight the increase in
cosmetic enhancements and make the reader aware of the consequences. In this extract, the main idea
is that unrealistic beauty ideals are being chased by humans because of the narrative set by social
media. The two organization strategies to be discussed are expert opinion and the use of statistical data
along with the language techniques of hypophora and satire.
Firstly, by referencing statistical data, it shows the massive surge of cosmetic
enhancement over an 18 year span ` the number of minimally invasive procedures tripled between 2000
and 2018.` This sudden growth which can also originate from the growth of social media. With social
media, the writer alludes that we are seeing more pictures of celebrities who are setting false
expectations. These false expectations cause some humans to think that maybe some of the features
that some celebrities have should be the norm for a normal person working a 9-5. The writers highlights
that it is not so as celebrities earn these features through ` regimented exercise, controlled diet`and last
but not least a team of `makeup, hair and fashion experts.`
The use of expert opinion is shown throughout the extract as the writer
uses reliable sources of opinion to support his claims. The opinion of a British plastic surgeon, Tijion Esho
states that ` selfies and photo-editing had instilled new beauty standards` this supports the writers main
idea in which unrealistic beauty ideals are being chased by humans. Seeing countless selfies from
celebrities such Kim Karadashian and Kylie Jenner can trick a woman into believing that after carrying a
baby for 9 months that it is a norm for a woman to get back to her original size pre-pregnancy. One can
forget that celebrities have probably hired trainers for these weight-loss programs.
Additionally, the use of language techniques were also used by the
writer. One such example is satire. In the first line, Ms. Fagan calls the facility where plastic surgeons
work the `aesthetic edge.` The writer mocks the value or pedestal humans place on these places where
they engage in constructing their unrealistic beauty ideals.
Another, language technique used by the writer was
hypophora. The writers poses the question, ` What makes photo-editing different` The writer then
answers this question by stating that these ideals came from celebrities. She says that these
expectations or ideals are unattainable as the way some celebrities achieve these goals are not common
for all people. One may have this ideal goal in mind but may never achieve it.
Module 2.

Communication is defined as the imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or

using some other medium. The extract above shows a conversation which involves, DSP Richard, a police
officer clashing with a woman who was protesting in the streets of Jamaica. The language registers used
by DSP Richards and the woman are frozen informal and formal.
DSP Richards seeing the situation addressed the woman in a calm manner addressing
her as ` Madam`. DSP Richards calm demeanour showed in his arrival as he saw the situation and
addressed the protestors calmly as seen in `Citizens I symphatize with your cause but you cannot block
the road.` The woman on the otherhand based on her perspective of the situation was
angry and had no respect for DSP Richards at that moment in time which saw her used a frozen informal
register. ` Damn Lie`
One verbal behavior which displayed social tension was shown by the woman
when she used repeitition as seen in line 14 ` Murder! Murder! Murder!` This shouting can lead to
violence as the protestors were already angry at one of their own being allegedly shot in the back by
police. A non-verbal behavior was also shown by the woman when she sneered
conmtempuously at the officer. The sneer highlights the disrespect and anger shown towards the police,
DPS Richards at the time. Normally, with a position of power, respect should come but based on the
circumstances the woman had 0 respect for the police. DSP Richards was within his right to even make
an arrest but he didn’t. During protests, many are arrested but DSP Richards decided to try and reason
with the crowd instead of provoking them.
One feature of Caribbean Creole Language English which is evident in
the passage between DSP Richards .
