INTRODUCTION
Biometrics for dummies is an introduction or simplified explanation of
biometrics, a technology that identifies or verifies people based on their physical or
behavioral characteristics to identify or verify individuals. Biometric technology uses
algorithms to compare the collected Biometric data against a database of known
individuals to identify or verify their identity.

Biometric data include fingerprints, facial recognition, iris or retinal scans,

voice recognition, and even DNA analysis. Biometrics is a term that can be used to
describe a wide range of technologies and concepts.

The theory behind biometrics, on the other hand, involves a more in depth
understanding of the science and mathematics behind the technology, including
pattern recognition algorithms, signal processing, and statistical analysis.

The way it works is that the system captures the biometric data of a person
and stores it in a database, when someone tries to access a system captures their
biometric data and compares it to the data stored in the database. If there is no
match , the person is granted access. The biometric is becoming more and more
popular because it is a secure and convenient way of identifying individuals. It is used
for things like security and access control, banking, healthcare, and border control.
This theory is used to design, develop, and improve biometric systems, and it is
typically studied by experts in fields such as computer science, mathematics, and
engineering.

HOW BIOMETRICS ARE USED :e fraud or buddy punching.

Biometrics are used to identify individuals based on unique physiological or
behavioral characteristics. Biometric systems use these characteristics to verify the
identity of individuals, typically for security or access control purposes. Here are
some common examples of how biometrics are used:

Fingerprint recognition: This is one of the most common biometric technologies

used in various settings such as mobile phones, computers, and access control
systems. Fingerprint recognition works by capturing an image of the fingerprint and
analyzing its unique patterns to match it with a pre-stored template.

Facial recognition: This technology uses cameras to capture an image of a person's
face and compares it with a pre-stored template to verify identity. Facial recognition
is used in various settings such as airports, stadiums, and law enforcement agencies.

Iris recognition: This technology uses cameras to capture an image of the iris, the
colored part of the eye, and compares it with a pre-stored template to verify

APPLICATION OF BIOMETRICS :
Biometrics has various applications across different industries and sectors. Here are
some common applications of biometrics:

Access Control: Biometric technology is used for access control in various settings
such as office buildings, hospitals, schools, and airports. Biometric systems are used
to grant access to secure areas by verifying the identity of individuals using their
unique physiological or behavioral characteristics such as fingerprints, facial
recognition, or iris recognition.

Time and Attendance Tracking: Biometric technology is used for tracking employee
attendance and work hours. This is done by verifying the identity of employees using
their fingerprints or other biometric data, eliminating the possibility of time fraud or
buddy punching.

Border Control and Immigration: Biometric technology is used in border control

and immigration to verify the identity of travelers. This is done by capturing and
analyzing biometric data such as fingerprints, facial recognition, or iris recognition.

Financial Transactions: Biometric technology is used in financial institutions to verify

the identity of customers for transactions such as withdrawals, transfers, or online
banking. This helps to prevent fraud and ensure secure transactions.

Law Enforcement: Biometric technology is used by law enforcement agencies to
identify suspects or criminals by matching their biometric data with a database of
known criminals.

Healthcare: Biometric technology is used in healthcare to ensure accurate patient

identification and prevent medical identity theft. This helps to ensure patient safety
and improve the quality of care.

Smartphones and Consumer Devices: Biometric technology is used in smartphones

and other consumer devices such as laptops and tablets for secure authentication.
This includes technologies such as facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, and iris
recognition.

TYPES OF BIOMETRICS :
• Fingerprint recognition
• Iris recognition
• Face recognition
• Voice recognition
• Retina recognition
• Hand geometry
• Signature recognition
• Behavioral biometrics

FACE RECOGNITION:
Facial recognition technology is a type of biometric technology that analyzes
unique facial features to identify and verify individuals. Here are the basic steps of
how face biometrics works:

Capture: The facial recognition system captures an image or video of the person's
face, either through a camera or from an existing photo or video.

Detection: The system detects the person's face in the image or video and locates
the key facial features, such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and jawline.

Alignment: The system aligns the facial features in the image or video to a standard
reference frame, ensuring that the facial features are in the same relative positions
for each person.

Extraction: The system extracts key facial features, such as the distance between the
eyes, the shape of the nose, and the contours of the face, and creates a mathematical
representation of these features called a "facial template".

Comparison: The system compares the facial template against a database of stored
templates to determine a match or non-match. If there is a match, the system
identifies the individual, and if there is a non-match, the system rejects the identity.

Verification or Identification: Depending on the application, the system may be

used for identity verification or identification .

SUMMURY :
The biometric is becoming more and more popular because it is a secure and
convenient way of identifying individuals. It is used for things like security and
access control, banking, healthcare, and border control. This theory is used to design,
develop, and improve biometric systems. Biometrics is a term that can be used to
describe a wide range of technologies and concepts .Biometrics is an important
technology for identity verification and authentication, and it has several key
advantages over traditional forms of identification, such as passwords and PINs.
