ROTATIONAL EQUILIBRIUM AND ROTATIONAL DYNAMICS

General Physics 1
Assignment

1. Define:
a. Moment of Inertia- According to Britannica it is the quantitative measure of
the rotational inertia of a body—i.e., the opposition that the body exhibits to having its
speed of rotation about an axis altered by the application of a torque (turning force). In
layman’s term we could define moment of inertia as inertia for rotation it is a measure
for a rigid body that exhibits rotational motion around a fixed axis.
Three Basic types of Moment of Inertia:
1. The mass moment of inertia- The distribution of the mass of an object
relative to a given axis.
2. The area moment of inertia- Geometrical property of an area which reflects
how its points are distributed with regard to an arbitrary axis.
3. Polar moment of inertia- A shaft or beam's resistance to being distorted by
torsion, as a function of its shape. The rigidity comes from the object’s cross-sectional
area only, and does not depend on its material composition.

Formula for Moment of Inertia:

I=MR2
Where: I=Inertia, M=Mass, R2= Perpendicular distance of an object to the axis of
rotation

b. Torque- Also called as the moment of a force is the measure of a force

tendency to cause a body to rotate. Meaning that is a force that acts on an object that
cause it to have a rotational force about an axis.
2. Find the formula of Moment s of Inertia of the following shapes:

a. Solid Cylinder or disk of radius r

Formula: I=MR2 same with the disk of radius r

b. Hollow Cylinder of radius r

Formula: I = 1/2 M (r22 + r12)

c. Solid Sphere of radius r

Formula: I=2/5 MR2

d. Hollow Sphere of radius r

Formula: I=2/3 MR2
