1. Define:
a. Moment of Inertia- According to Britannica it is the quantitative measure of
the rotational inertia of a body—i.e., the opposition that the body exhibits to having its
speed of rotation about an axis altered by the application of a torque (turning force). In
layman’s term we could define moment of inertia as inertia for rotation it is a measure
for a rigid body that exhibits rotational motion around a fixed axis.
Three Basic types of Moment of Inertia:
1. The mass moment of inertia- The distribution of the mass of an object
relative to a given axis.
2. The area moment of inertia- Geometrical property of an area which reflects
how its points are distributed with regard to an arbitrary axis.
3. Polar moment of inertia- A shaft or beam's resistance to being distorted by
torsion, as a function of its shape. The rigidity comes from the object’s cross-sectional
area only, and does not depend on its material composition.
I=MR2
Where: I=Inertia, M=Mass, R2= Perpendicular distance of an object to the axis of
rotation
