OVERVIEW and COMMENTARY

for the Book of GENESIS I.

Genesis was reputedly written by and
based on both oral tradition passed down
to Moses by his ancestors and also, divine
inspiration given him by GOD. Moses is
said to have been born 2638 years after
the first man Adam and died at the age of
120 years old with the last forty years of
his life spent as a servant and prophet of
YHWH God.

Genesis and the book of Enoch chronicles

the history of the first family of humans
on earth, about their experiences with
their creator who is initially designated
as (Elohim), which translates from
the Hebrew language of the Bible into
gods in English.

Genesis paints a disturbing picture of

them and their offspring as they fail to
achieve a successful and meaningful
relationship with one particular god, their
creator whose name is later disclosed in
scripture as (YHWH in English). In
still later scripture, he is found to be
referred to generally, as GOD.

This early historical record of GOD’s

dealings with his early human family
records both the covenant relationship he
had with them and their violation of that
covenant.

In the historical discourse we know as

Genesis, it delineates the differences
between those who wished to remain in a
relationship with their heavenly creator
and those who took positions opposing
him, and who in their defiance, influenced
the behavior of future generations of
humans down to this day.

Early generations of humans had to make

a choice as to whom their allegiance
belonged. Were they to honor and humbly
submit to the wishes of YHWH, their
creator and heavenly benefactor or would
they insist on following their own
inclinations and the suggestions of
another supernatural, one who promoted
self-sovereignty, , a god who had himself,
become the arch enemy of YHWH, their
creator.

By and large, the historical record of

humanity reveals that the vast majority
of early humans on earth chose to cast
their lot, that is, to take sides with, the
supernatural spirit being who is
portrayed as GOD’s enemy throughout
human and scriptural history.

That supernatural spirit influenced the

mindset and thinking of early humans to
such an extent that the earth literally
became filled with violence and anti-god
activity. That is, activity which the
creator YHWH designated as loathsome
and disgusting. On the other hand, it was
activity which the supernatural opponent
of YHWH not only condoned and engaged
in himself but taught his followers to
emulate.

The book of Genesis describes how

widespread the evil was by those who
chose not to follow YHWH and his ways,
and it says:

“When YHWH saw how wicked

humans on earth had become and
how evil their thoughts were all
the time, he was sorry that he
had ever made them and put
them on the earth.”

Despite widespread opposition to YHWH

which had literally consumed the human
family on earth at the time, there was one
noteworthy exception. It was a man
named Noah and his family who chose to
remain loyal and follow YHWH god. In
doing so this human paternal example
rejected the alternative lifestyles
promoted by that supernatural adversary
who alternatively became described in
later scripture as the Great Serpent,
Lucifer, and Satan the Devil.
This man was Noah and YHWH god
chose him and his immediate family to
restart the human family after expunging
people and the evil that had overtaken it
from the earth in those times.

Noah’s family as new progenitors of

humanity began a new saga in Genesis
with descendants who followed godly
direction and remained loyal to YHWH
and others who did not, thereby placing
themselves in league with GOD’s arch
enemy Satan the Devil.

Then rest of Genesis is devoted to the

family of one of Noah’s descendants, a
named Abraham who due to his faith in
YHWH was promised to become the
forefather of a great nation of followers of
YHWH. His posterity was to provide a
‘seed’ through whom vindication and
restoration to the originally intended
relationship with their creator, YHWH
god would become possible.

Genesis concludes with YHWH god

having controlled events to form a nation
of believers through the posterity of
Abraham’s descendants.

By the end of Genesis, those believers,

despite having grown in numbers to form
an entire nation of people GOD chose to
provide an example to the rest of the
world, found themselves in bondage
within the land of a nation of people and
to a Pharoah devoted to a god and gods in
opposition to YHWH.

Thus, Genesis ends with GOD’s people

who have by then become known as the
nation of Israel, in dire straits, under
oppression and hardship imposed by
cruel slave masters who support and
venerate supernatural beings and who
remain avowed enemies of YHWH God.

THE BOOK OF GENESIS

[meaning “Beginning”]

GENESIS I.

Describing the earliest days, from the beginning till

the time human beings came to occupy the earth.
Thought to have been written by Moses somewhere
around 1445 BCE, according to our calendar.

Genesis Chapter 1.

The Creation
[John 1:1, Colossians 15:17,19, Proverbs 8:22-31]
Genesis 1:1 In the a beginning when b Elohim began to
create the heavens and earth, 2.the earth was barren,
with no form of life. It was under a raging ocean,
covered with darkness. But the Spirit of Elohim was
moving over the water.

3. Then Elohim commanded, “Let there be light”

and there was light. The light was pleasing to him,
so he approved it and separated the light from
darkness. 4. He named the illuminated periods ‘day’
c
yom and the darkened periods night layil, lah'-yil.

5. There came to be an evening followed by

morning, a d yom, also an end to the first day e yom.
(creative day #1)

6.Then Elohim said let there be an expanse to divide

the waters in the heavens from those on earth. 7.So
Elohim made the atmospheric expanse and
separated the water above and below the expanse.
And so, it was. 8. Elohim named what was above the
earth sky. Then there was evening, and morning, a d
yom, concluding a second day. e yom (Creative day
#2)

9. Elohim said, "Let the water under the sky come

together into one area, and let dry ground appear.
And so, it was. 10 Elohim named the dry ground
land. The water which came together he named sea.
Elohim saw that it was good ( f .towb).

11 Then Elohim said, "Let the earth produce

vegetation: plants bearing seeds, each according to
its own type, and fruit trees bearing fruit with seeds,
each according to its own type." And so, it was. 12
The earth produced vegetation; plants bearing
seeds, each according to its own type, and trees
bearing fruit with seeds, each according to its own
type. Elohim saw what had been made was good ( f
towb).

13 Then an evening came followed by a morning

ending the third day e yom (Creative day #3)

14 Then Elohim said, "Let there be lights in the sky.

These lights will separate the days from the nights.
They will be used for signs when special festivals
begin and to show the days and years. 15 They will
appear in the sky to shine light on the earth." And it
happened. 16 And Elohim made the two prominent
luminaries: the great luminary to dominate the day,
and the small luminary and stars to dominate the
night. 17 And Elohim set them in the visible sky
allowing them to shine upon the earth 18 to
dominate the day and the night, and to distinguish
the light from the darkness. Elohim saw that it was
good. (2towb) 19 And there was evening and there
was morning, a fourth day (e yom) had ended.
(Creative day #4)

20 And Elohim said, Let the waters bring forth

abundantly and swarm with living creatures, and let
birds fly over the earth in the open expanse of the
sky. 21 Elohim created the large sea creatures and
every living thing that moves, which the waters
brought forth abundantly, according to their kinds,
and every winged bird according to its kind. And
Elohim saw that it was good (2towb) and He
approved it. 22 And Elohim blessed them, saying;
Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters in the seas,
and let the fowl multiply in the earth. 23 And there
was evening and there was morning, a fifth day e
yom had ended. (Creative day #5)

24 And Elohim said, Let the earth bring forth living

creatures according to their kinds: livestock,
creeping things, and wild beasts of the earth
according to their kinds. And it was so. 25 Elohim
made every type of wild animal, every type of
domestic animal, and every type of creature that
crawls on the ground. Elohim saw that they were
good ( 2 towb).
26. Then Elohim said, 'Let us make humans in our
own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them
be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven,
the cattle, all the wild animals and all the creatures
that creep along the ground.'

27 So Elohim created human beings in his own

image, making them to be like himself. He created
them male and female, 28 blessed (g berakhah)
them, and said, "Have many children, so that your
descendants will live all over the earth and bring it
under their control. I am putting you in charge of
the fish, the birds, and all the wild animals.

29 I have provided all kinds of grain and all kinds of

fruit for you to eat; 30 but for all the wild animals
and for all the birds I have provided grass and leafy
plants for food"---and it was done. 31 Elohim looked
at everything he had made, and it was very good f.
( towb-me’od).
Evening passed and morning came, concluding the
sixth day [ e yom]. {Creative day # 6}

FOOT NOTES for Genesis Chapter

ONE:
a
Beginning -There is no element of
time measurement which may be
attached to this statement. Time as it
relates to us on earth and how we
relate to it simply did not exist for this
stage of the account. One could apply
the Hebrew term ‘Yom’ with the
meaning of a duration or era of
undetermined length to it, but
scripture simply defines this entire
era’s duration as the “beginning.”
b
Elohim - Literally translates as gods
(plural) in Hebrew. For further
clarification as to specific meaning of a
Elohim at Genesis 1:1 we must employ
the synergy principle wherein the
entire Bible is taken in context.

According to John 1:1 the “Word”

(“Logos”), who we know as Jesus, in
his pre-earthly form is described as
being “with GOD in the beginning”.
This is further corroborated at
Colossians 1:15, 16. Where Christ is
described as the “first born of all
creation, the one through whom and
by whom all other things were
formed”. Also, Wisdom (or Logos,
Christ in prehuman form) is spoken of
at Proverbs 8:22-31 as being with
GOD in the beginning. Thus, we have
synergistic evidence that ‘Elohim’
consists of a minimum of two entities,
YHWH god and his firstborn son Jesus
Christ, in his pre-human form. The
participation of other gods in the
creation may also be inferred from the
plural sense while not explicitly
substantiated.

About the ‘day’ (yom) in Genesis:

The Hebrew word translated as ‘day’
is ‘yom’, a word with multiple (at
least 7) Hebrew meanings including
four found in the Genesis creation
account.

They include a 12-hour daylight

period, a twenty-four-hour night/day
cycle, the entire lifetime of an
individual, or an era of unspecified
duration or ‘age’ of undisclosed length,
a general time during which
something occurs, a year, a lifetime,
and a division of time. The translator
must use discretion based on his
understanding of the immediate
context, overall context, and GOD-
given logic in choosing the correct
meaning for ‘yom’ in any given verse.

In the book of Genesis, we see at least

four different definitions for ‘yom’
given in the same account, thereby
dispelling the notion that a yom
always indicates a 24-hour period.
They are;

‘day’ (cyom). Here the twelve-hour

duration of light following darkness is
referred to as a ‘yom’ day).

‘day’(dyom) In This instance, it is a

twenty-four-hour period involving the
cycle of both darkness and light.

‘day’ (eyom) In this application the

Hebrew word ‘yom’ takes on a
entirely different meaning;
encompassing a duration of
undisclosed length during which the
activity previously described took
place. Much as an “age” or era without
any disclosed length.

‘good’ [f towb] The Hebrew word

‘towb’ (good) is another word with
multiple meanings. They are, pleasant,
suitable, admirable, valuable in
estimation, appropriate, becoming,
right, or excellent.

‘Very good’ Used for ‘towb’ in a

superlative sense when towb-me’od
(very good) is seen, it indicates
exceedingly ‘good’ tantamount to
perfection’.

Blessed [g berakhah]-A blessing as a beneficial

gift or present.
Genesis Chapter 2

Creation Summed up, then, Focus on the

First Human Pair

Genesis 2:1. And so the heavens and the earth and

everything else were completed in all their vast
array. 2 By the seventh a day (yom) Elohim had
finished the work of creating; So, in the seventh a
day (yom) Elohim desisted or ceased from all his
work which he had been doing. 3 Then Elohim b
blessed the seventh a (yom) day and made it special,
setting it apart as c holy because on that a day (yom)
he stopped all his work of creation.

4 What follows is an account of the origins of heaven

and earth in their being prepared, in the d day (yom)
of e Elohim’s making heaven and earth.

5 Before any plant of the field was in the earth and

before any herb of the field had grown; nothing was
growing in the fields for eYHWH Elohim had not
caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no one
to cultivate the ground; 6 Instead, underground
water would mist up from the earth and water the
entire surface of the ground.

7 Then Elohim formed the man from the f dust of the

ground and blew the breath of life into his nostrils
and the man became a living g soul.

8 Elohim had planted a garden in Eden, in the east.

That's where he put the man whom he had formed.
9 There Elohim had made trees grow out of the
ground. These trees were pleasing to look at, and
their fruit was good to eat. The h tree of life and the i
tree of the knowledge of good and evil grew in the
middle of the garden.

10 A river rose in Eden to water the garden. Beyond

there it divided and became four branches. 11 The
name of the first river is Pishon. This is the one that
winds throughout j Havilah, a land where there is
gold. 12 The gold of that land is pure. k Bdellium and
onyx are also found there.) 13 And the name of the
second river is Geon, this it is which encircles the
whole land of Cush (Sudan).14 And the name of the
third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria.
And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 Then YHWH Elohim took the man and put him

in the Garden of Eden to work the soil and care for
the garden. 16 YHWH Elohim gave him this
admonition: "You may l eat from any tree in the
garden. 17 except the one that has the power to let
you m know the difference between right and wrong.
If you eat fruit from that tree, before the a day is
over you will certainly die!"

18 Then YHWH Elohim said, It is not good that the

man should be alone, let us make for him a helper, a
companion suited to him. 19 For out of the ground
YHWH Elohim had formed every animal of the field
and all fowl of the heavens, and brought them to
Man, to experience what he would call them; and
whatever Man called each living soul, that became
its name.20. So, Adam gave names to all the
livestock and to the birds of the air and to every wild
beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found
a companion (suitable, adapted, and
complementary) for him. 21 So YHWH Elohim
caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while
he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place
with flesh. 22 And from the rib, which YHWH
Elohim had taken from the man, he made a woman,
and presented her to the man.

23 Upon which the man said: This one at last is

bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh! She is to be
called Woman because she was taken from man. 24
For this reason men will leave their fathers and
mothers and be united to their wives, and they will
become as one flesh. 25 Now, although Adam and
his wife were both naked, neither of them had any
sense of feeling shame.

Genesis Chapter 3

Human Sin Spurs GOD’s Punishment and

also His First Prophecy

Genesis 3:1. Now there was a a serpent in the garden.

He was the b shrewdest of all the other creatures
YHWH Elohim had made.

"Really?" he asked the woman. "Did Elohim really

say you must not eat any of the fruit from the trees
in the garden?"

2 The woman answered, "Elohim said we could eat

fruit from any tree in the garden, 3 but of the fruit of
the tree in the middle of the garden He said, "You
must not eat it, nor touch it, for if you do you will
die.'

4 The serpent replied, "That's not true; you will not

die. 5 " Elohim knows that your eyes will be opened
when you eat it. You will become as Elohim, c
knowing everything, both good and evil."

6 The woman supposed that the tree was good to

eat, attractive to the eye, also, it became enticing to
her for the wisdom that it could give. So, she took
some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her
husband who was with her, and he ate it.

7 Then it was to them as if their eyes opened, and

they immediately began to see things differently.
They saw that they were naked. So, they got some fig
leaves, sewed them together, and wore them for
clothes.

8 Later when the man and his wife heard the sound
of YHWH Elohim walking in the garden in the cool
of the day, they hid from him among the trees of the
garden.

9 And the voice of YHWH Elohim came to the man,

saying: Where are you? 10 He answered, "I heard
you in the garden; but I was afraid, because I was
naked, so I hid myself."

11 And YHWH Elohim said: Who gave you the

knowledge that you were naked, without clothing?
Have you eaten fruit from the tree which I said you
were not to take? 12 Adam replied, "The woman you
put here with me; she gave me some fruit from the
tree, and I ate it."

13 Then YHWH Elohim asked the woman, "Why did

you do such a thing?" Her answer was: The a serpent
beguiled (cheated, outwitted, or deceived) me, and
so I ate.

14 Then YHWH Elohim said to the serpent, "You

will be punished for this; you alone of all the
animals must bear this curse: From now on you will
crawl on your belly, and you will have to eat dust as
long as you live.

15 And I will put b enmity between you and the

woman, and between your seed and her Seed. He
(her seed) will bruise your head, and you shall
bruise His heel.

16 To the woman YHWH Elohim said, "I will greatly

increase your pangs in childbearing. In pain you
shall bring forth children, still your desire shall be
for your husband and he shall have dominion over
you.

17 And to Adam he said, "Because you listened to

your wife and ate the fruit, I told you not to eat, I
have placed a c1 curse on the ground. You will have
to endure difficulty and work hard all your life for
the food the ground produces. 18 Your foods are
plants and herbs, but the ground will produce
thorns and thistles.19 You will work hard, until your
face is covered with sweat. You will work hard until
the day you die, and then you will become dust
again. I used dust to make you, and when you die,
you will become dust again."

20 Adam named his wife d Eve (Chavah). He gave

her this name because she would become the
mother of everyone who ever lived.

21 YHWH Elohim used animal skins and fashioned

some clothes for the man and his wife, which he put
on them.
22 YHWH Elohim said, "Look, the man has become
like us. He c knows about good and evil. And now
the man might take the fruit from the tree of life. If
he eats that fruit, he will live forever."

23 So YHWH Elohim sent the man out of the

Garden of Eden to work the ground he had been
produced from.

24 After he sent the man out from the garden, he

put e Cherubs with a flaming f sword of fire at the
entrance of the garden to protect it. The sword
flashed around and around, guarding the way to the
tree of life.

‘snake’ here for the Hebrew word
(nachash).The same entity is later
identified at Revelations 12:9 and 20:2
as the Devil, Satan.
b
shrewdest - (Hebrew`aruwm) carried
a meaning of subtle, ‘crafty’ or ‘sly’.
b1
enmity – some versions (hostility,
others, hatred or make enemies)
c
knowing – The Hebrew word for
‘know’ (da`ath) carried the meaning of

weapon of permanent destruction.

Genesis Chapter 4

Cain and Abel – Murder joins the Human

Family

Genesis 4:1. Adam had sexual relations with his wife

Eve. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son.
She named him Cain. Eve said, "I have gotten a man
as YHWH promised" 2 Then she gave birth to
another child named Abel, Cain’s brother. Abel
became a caretaker of domestic animals and Cain
became a cultivator of crops.

3 After some time Cain brought some of his crops

and gave it as an offering to YHWH. .4 and Abel also
gave an offering to YHWH. He killed the first-born
lamb from one of his flock and gave YHWH the best
parts of it. YHWH was pleased with Abel and his
offering, 5 but not with Cain’s, as YHWH had no
respect or regard for Caine and his offering.. So,
Cain became exceedingly angry and indignant, and
he looked dejected and depressed. 6 YHWH asked
Cain, 'Why are you so angry and downcast?

7 You know that if you do what is right, I will accept

you. But if you don't, sin is lurking just outside your
door, ready to devour you. That sin will want to
destroy you, but you must not let it."

8 Later Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go hike

into the countryside." And when they were out in a
field, Cain set upon Abel and killed him.

9 Afterwards YHWH asked Cain, "Where is Abel?"

"How should I know?" he answered. "Am I
supposed to look after my brother?"

10 Then YHWH said, 'What have you done?'

'Listen! Your brother's blood is crying out to me

from the ground like a voice calling for a requite.

11 And now you are cursed more than the ground

which opened its mouth to receive your brother's
blood from your hand. 12 No longer will it yield
abundant crops for you, no matter how hard you
work! From now on you will be a homeless fugitive
on the earth, constantly wandering from place to
place."

13 Cain then said to YHWH, 'My punishment is far

greater than I can bear. 14 "You're making me leave
my home and live far from you. I will have to
wander about without a home, and just anything
could kill me." 15 "Not so!" YHWH said to him.
Whatsoever may kill Cain, he shall be avenged
sevenfold." So, YHWH put a mark on Cain, so that
no one or nothing should kill him on sight.

16 And Cain went out from the presence of YHWH,

and dwelt in the land of Nod, a land of wandering,
toward the east of Eden.

Cain’s Progeny – Cain to Lamech

17 Later, Cain and his wife had a son they named

Enoch. At the same time, Cain was building a town,
and so he named it Enoch after his son.18 Then
Enoch had a son named Irad, who had a son named
Mehujael, who had a son named Methushael, who
had a son named Lamech. 19 Lamech married Adah,
then Zillah. 20 Lamech and Adah had two sons,
Jabal and Jubal. 21 Their son Jabal was the first to
live in tents and raise sheep and goats. Jubal was
the first to play harps and flutes. 22 Lamech and
Zillah had a son named Tubal Cain who made tools
out of bronze and iron. They also had a daughter,
whose name was Naamah. 23 One day, Lamech said
to his two wives, "A young man wounded me, and I
killed him. 24 Anyone who tries to get even with me
will be punished ten times more than anyone who
tries to get even with Cain."

Adam Produces Godly Descendants

25 Adam had intercourse with his wife, and they had
another son. They named him Seth, because they
said, "God has given us a son to take the place of
Abel, who was killed by his brother Cain." 26 Later,
Seth had a son and named him Enosh. About this
time people started worshiping YHWH.

Genesis Chapter 5

Adam’s Progeny, Ten generations - : Adam

to Noah (Approx. 1056 years)

Genesis 5:1. This is the history of the generations of

Adam. When GOD created man, he made him in the
likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female,
a
blessed them, and named them "Human Beings."

3 When Adam was 130 years old, he fathered a son

in his own likeness, in his own image. He named
him Seth.4 After Adam became the father of Seth,
he lived another 800 years and had other children,
sons, and daughters. 5 So, altogether Adam’s life
spanned 930 years, and he died.

6 When Seth was one hundred five, he had a son

named Enosh. 7 After Enosh was born, Seth lived
807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 So
Seth lived a total of 912 years; then he died.

9 After Enosh was 90 years old, he had a son named

Kenan. 10 After Kenan was born, Enosh lived 815
years and had other sons and daughters. 11 So
Enosh lived a total of 905 years, when he died.

12 After Kenan was 70 years old, he had a son

named Mahalalel. 13 After Mahalalel was born,
Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and
daughters. 14 So Kenan lived a total of 910 years;
then he died.

15 When Mahalalel was 65 years old, he had a son

named Jared. 16 After Jared was born, Mahalalel
lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters.
17 So Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years; then he
died.

18 After Jared was 162 years old, he had a son

named b Enoch. 19 After Enoch was born, Jared
lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.
20 So Jared lived a total of 962 years; then he died.

21 After Enoch was 65 years old, he had a son

named Methuselah. 22 After Methuselah was born,
23
Enoch walked with GOD for 300 years and had
other sons and daughters. and then one day he
disappeared, because GOD took him away”. 23 So
Enoch lived a total of 365 years.
