Description of lift component Lift Control Unit for electric lifts with
monitoring circuit for safety chain and door
bridging circuit, also applied for monitoring,
detection and activation of unintended car
movement protection (UCMP)
Type Arkel, ARCODE
Laboratory
Address component test location
Data of examination March - September 2013,
Rev.1; November 7,2014
Rev.2; August 2015;
Rev.3; April 2016
Examination performed by P.J. Schaareman
Additionally a door bridging functionality (DBR board) and UCM Solenoid control such
as ApRe or ApRemini board can be added to the unit.
As alternative for the ApRe(mini) board an output relay of ARCODE can be
programmed to (de-)activate directly the UCM solenoid, this option can be applied
when the power to the control is provided with an UPS device.
To complete the electrical system of the lift there are interface boards for the controller
(KBK-10 and KBK-1 1), a control board in the inspection box and not safety related
boards for the car panel, landing door and signalization.
Regarding relevant safety requirements the boards used in the lift control system
contain monitoring points for safety chain, a door bridging circuit and several
detection/monitoring functions (UCM detection, contactors/brake monitoring, out of
service control... ) which were the subject for the examination and tests.
Depending the characteristics of the lift the ARCODE can be programmed for the
specific functions needed. When pre-opening and/or re-levelling is used ARCODE can
detect UCM, monitor the brake switches or other mechanisms and activate the brake
or a safety solenoid on the overspeed governor.
ln case pre-opening or re-levelling with open doors is not installed and certified brakes
are used with gearless machines (or directly mounted on the (axis of) traction sheave
in case of geared machines) are used with, ARCODE can be used for monitoring the
correct functioning of the brake. UCM test is in this case not required.

Monitoring options
The ARCODE integrated system foresees in all possible monitoring functions used for
electric lifts. Depending the type of lift and applied protection devices the proper
monitoring functions need to be selected and activated in the menu. Inputs on the
ARCODE can be programmed to monitor the correct working of the brake(s), the
ApRe or ApRemini control board and/or the UCM overspeed governor solenoid.
The brake monitoring of the ARCODE described in this report shall be used in
combination with a suitable detection system and a suitable brake to build an
unintended car movement protection for lifts. lt ís done with normally closed contact(s)
on the brake.
The activated system will stop the lift when the programmed monitoring options detect
the not correct functioning of the brake, ApRe or ApRemini control board or UCM
solenoid. The monitoring function needs to see a change of status of the monitoring
input every run of the lift and also the correct dropping of the brake or UCM solenoid
(closing of the monitoring switch(es)) when stopped.
After detection maximal two times a monitoring failure within a certain time frame (see
error handling), the lift remains out of service, even after switching off and on the
supply power.
Resetting of the system is only possible via the intervention of a competent person.
Error handling
ln general ARCODE has three levels of errors.
-
Permanently blocking errors; These errors are stored in non-volatile memory
and need to be reset with the AREM handheld device,
-
Blocking errors; these errors are not saved and can be reset by power up
sequence, system reset or inspection/recall mode switching and
-
Temporary errors; these errors clear automatically if the error reason
disappears or after a certain time period.
ln most cases when a monitoring fault is recognized by the system, ARCODE will try
to start again after 30 seconds, if the fault is cleared the lift will run again. lf the fault
reappears within 30 runs, the lift will be blocked. Other faults such as UCM detection
will immediately give a permanent error.

The PCB's are examined based on the relevant requírements stated in EN 81-1:1998
+ A3:2009, article 9.11.3, 9.11.7,9.11.9, 14.1.1, 14.1.2.1.3, Annex F.8 and H
According to Annex H of the EN 81 -112 and table 5.15 of the EN 81-50 (par 3.1 and
3.6) the creepage and clearance distances shall fulfil the requirements of the
EN 60664-1 taking into account:
- pollution degree 3
- material group lll
- inhomogeneous electrical field
- over-voltage category lll
- printed wiring column not used
Outer layers:
For 230 VAC these distances shall be 4.0mm for creepage and 3.0mm for clearance
For 24 VDC these distances shall be 1.25mm for creepage and 0.8mm for clearance
4. Results
The creepage distances and clearances between terminals, connected to the safety
circuit and tracks behind these terminals to each other and to another voltage do fulfill
to the above (chapter 3) mentioned distances.

After the final examination the components and the technical file were found in
accordance with the requirements. The functional tests passed without remarks
The key parameters for detecting UCM are:
Detection distance (variable) : ML magnets switching point
Max. response time MOT (DBR) : 10 ms
Speed and distance travelled : to be calculated
5. Conditions
On the EU type-examination certificate the following conditions apply:
- lncoming ground is connected to terminal 104, the ground used for the main
contactors and/or ApRe or ApRemini shall be supplied from terminal 108.
- When the door-bridging option is used; the lift stops and maintains stationary
when a fault in the A, B, C circuit or door-zone information occurs.
- The door-zone sensors activation must be monitored on proper operation by
detecting the delayed activation of the second sensor after activation of the first.
- The door-zone magnet is properly fixed (e.9. screwed, glued).
- The ARCODE manual and the operating instructions for UCMP including the
required UCMP tests procedures need to be available for installation,
maintenance and testing purposes.
- The AREM handheld device shall be available for maintenance and inspection.
- The installer of the lift needs to define the final solution taken into account the key-
parameters of the ARCODE control, the control panel and the stopping means.
The maximum detection distance is variable and will standard be around 15cm
(ML magnets). This might be too much for the application and needs then to be
shortened to fit in into the total system and finally stop the lift within the required
distances of EN 81-1+43 clause 9.11.5 / EN 81-20 clause 5.6.7.5.
- In the final acceptance test it shall be verified that the correct functionality with the
applied UCM protection means is activated and operates as intended (see
firmware version, ARCODE Manual and EN 81-1+43 resp. EN 81-20/50).
- Only at a complete run of the lift with the ARCODE coil interface option a 2 sec.
delay to drop the overspeed governor solenoid is allowed as soon as a (door)
safety switch is opened. The ARCODE interface relay is never energized at the
floor, not even at re-levelling.
- After detecting UCM the lift is kept out of service, also when the main power is
switched off and on again.
