Lesson 3: Factoring Polynomi
Lets take a trip back to Grade 10, where you learned several methods for factoring... Remember

arta: Factoring Review
Factoring a polynomial means writin it s a product. Its the opposite of expanding. When a
polynomials fully factored, only 1 (or ~1) remains as common factors in the factored expression.

art B: Factoring by Grouping
Do you notice something different about this polynomial?? It has __termsl! What do we do now??
We need a new method for polynomials which cannot be factored using one of the above methods.
Factor by grouping occurs when you have more than 3 terms in a polynomial
1. Group pairs of terms,
2, Factor the greatest common factor from
each pat
3._ Factor out the greatest common facto
(& + 1), 10 complete the factoring.

‘What happens when you have 4 terms, you try to factor by grouping and it's just not working?? Can't
find that common factor each set of terms has to get to simplified factored form?77?
‘We need a new method. Given the function below, we can factor using a familar method greviously
discussed with anew twist!
