TEST INTERPRETATION :
B-HCG is done for confirmation of pregnancy. Beta HCG levels usually double about every 2days for the
first four weeks of pregnancy. A slower rate of increase suggests a possible miscarriage or ectopic
pregnancy. It is used for monitoring patients for retained products of conception, aiding in the diagnosis of
the gestational trophoblastic disease(GTD),testicular tumors, ovarian germ cell tumors ,teratomas. After
delivery,pregnancy termination,human chorionic gonadotropin(HCG) falls with a half-life of 24 to 36 hours,
until pre-pregnancy levels are reached. Gestational trophoblastic disease(GTD) is associated with very
considerable elevations of HCG,usually above 2 multiples of the medians for gestational age persisting or
even raising beyond the first trimster.
