Occupational therapy

As an occupational therapist, I view occupational science as a subject that holds benefits

for my profession in general and is a guide for the practice of occupational therapy. Occupation

defines all activities that people occupy. As an occupational therapist assistant, I dedicate my

time to assisting people and their families to participate in those activities. Occupational

therapists work with specific groups, for instance, in my case, I am working in a school system

that offers therapy to children and also in an outpatient facility helping people to recover from

hip fractures, knee replacement and stroke. I help these people who have suffered injuries

through accidents to recover to continue engaging in their daily life activities. I train my clients

to either use assertive technologies or teach them to hold objects or ways to walk. Occupational

science has always been my guide in executing my duties since it is a study of human occupation

or participation. Just like in my profession, research in occupational science focuses in specific

groups, like children and elderly people and their specific challenges to engage in activities, for

this reasons I am of the view that occupational science has always been a guide to occupational

therapists.

I believe that the landscape for the scientific community has been changed by the

emergence of information society and rapid technological developments. It is essential to clarify

the international perspectives and bodies of knowledge forming foundations of any subject

including occupational science, for this reason, occupational science can be universally accepted

as a principle science informing occupational therapy. In my practice as an occupational therapist

assistant, my duties have been influenced by occupational science concepts that developed in

other parts of the world but they apply to my country context.
