SETTING CLINIC

PATIENT

You are an 88-year old who lives independently. You have just reached the results of tests
performed on a urine sample which shows that you have a urinary tract infection (UTI). You
have had several UTIs recently .You are worried about the recurrence and are discussing this
with your doctor

TASK

 Explain that you are sick of UTIs and want to take more precautions.
 Tell the doctor that you eat well, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. You drink
about two glasses of water and two coffees a day. You are otherwise fit, healthy and very
active; you walk for 15-minutes each day.
 Find out what treatment the doctor suggests.
 Seek reassurance that the suggested treatment will stop the infections recurrence.

NURSE

You are consulting an 88-year old who lives independently .You have just given the results from
a urine sample. The patient has a urinary tract infection (UTI) and has had several proven UTIs
recently. The patient is concerned about the recurrence and you are discussing some precautions
.His/ her general health is good otherwise

TASK

 Find out the patient's diet , fluid, and exercise.


 Congratulate the patient on his/ her healthy lifestyle. Highlight that good hygiene is also
important and educate the patient on 'double voiding'( e.g., emptying bladder, waiting a
moment then trying to empty again, etc.)
 Suggest treatment with antibiotics(e.g prescription for trimethropin 300mg/day forthree
days, three month course of low dose nitrofurantoin, etc
 Reassure the patient that with dedication and patience you expect to be able to resolve
the current UTI issues
