C - REACTIVE PROTEIN
Sample type: serum
*CRP is a better " Inflammation marker "" than ESR. It is also much better than WBC count and
at time, IL6.
*CRP both rise and decreases rapildy withini 4 to 8 hrs,Which makes it more suitable to determine
current inflammation.
*It can be used to differentiate bacterial form viral infection.
*Serial estimation of CRP is very useful in monitoring of antibiotic therapy in infection.
*It is also important in collagen diseases including SLE.
* In healthy persons, CRP is typically less than 1 mg/L. In absence of other causes, level of 2 to 3 mg/L
or more may indicate
athereosclerosis with inflammation and therfore coronary risk.
*In neonates, reference range is uaually lowre than adilt normal of upto 10 mg/L.Levels of 2 to 3 mg/L
or higher may indicate septicemia.
