Glossary

Abject: the state of being extremely unhappy, poor, unsuccessful, etc.

Althorp: Althorp House, the Childhood Home of Diana.

Blinkered: a blinkered person is unable or unwilling to understand other people's beliefs, and
blinkered opinions or ways of behaving show someone is unable or unwilling to understand other
people.

Blockbuster: a book or film that is very successful.

Coffin: (syn. casket) a long box in which the body of a dead person is buried or burned.

Forbearance: the quality of being patient and being able to forgive someone or control yourself in
a difficult situation.

Ghoul: an evil spirit that eats dead bodies.

Heir: a person (next monarch) who will legally receive money, property, or a title from another
person (the monarch), especially an older member of the same family, when that other person dies.

Penny-ante: of little value or importance.

Pustule: a small, raised area on the skin that contains pus (= thick liquid).

Rapscallion: a mischievous person.

Scattered: covering a wide area. (Esp.: disperso)

Sentient: able to experience feelings. (Esp.: sensible)

Skewed: not accurate, exact, or straight.

Spare: If something is spare, it is available because it is extra. In a monarchy, it refers to the brother
or sister who would rule instead if something happened to the “heir” (the next monarch).

Tawdry: 1. Looking bright and attractive but in fact cheap and of low quality. 2. Showing or having
low moral standards.

To grip: 1. To hold very tightly. E.g.: The baby gripped my finger with her tiny hand. 2. When an
emotion such as fear grips you, you feel it strongly. 3. To keep someone's attention completely.

Unassuageable: (syn. Insatiable) not able to be assuaged or relieved. Assuaged: (of a feeling) not
made less strong or easier to bear.
