This document is a project proposal for a case study on hydrogen fuel. The students, Ujjwal Kashyap and Saksham Mittal, will examine hydrogen fuel as a potential substitute for fossil fuels under their teacher Dr. SG Warkar at Delhi Technological University. While hydrogen fuel has advantages like being a clean fuel with zero carbon emissions and the highest energy density, there are also challenges to commercial production, storage, transportation, and safe use of hydrogen that need to be addressed. The case study aims to explore applications of hydrogen fuel and how it can replace fossil fuels through problem-based learning.

Daulatpur Village Delhi-110042 ABSTRACT In today’s growing world fossil fuel consumption is increasing rapidly that gradually leads to decline of availability of fossil fuel. So, what could be the best substitute to the fossil fuel that give us required amount of energy with greater efficiency? Hydrogen fuel could be the best alternative. Now the question arises, why Hydrogen fuel only? As per data hydrogen on combustion has highest specific energy (energy per unit mass) among all other available fossil fuel. It is more environment friendly than other available fuel. Hydrogen fuel releases water which is a non-toxic, non-harmful by product on reaction inside the fuel cell. It is a very clean fuel with zero carbon content when burned in the presence of oxygen. As we know every reaction come up with some advantages and disadvantages. With some favorites, we also have some challenges in front of us. Firstly, Green hydrogen is not present really as a product. Commercially produced hydrogen through the process of steam reformation of methane, where methane is burnt using water, generating CO2 and 4 H2 molecules which somewhat contribute to the global warming. Its storage and transportation are very tedious tasks and major challenges in front of us. Also, hydrogen gas is very inflammable which should be used very carefully by following safety measures. This case study uses a problem based learning approach for knowing the applications of hydrogen fuel and how it can be used as a replacement of fossil fuels in today’s era.
