My German Brother

Chico Buarque
The book written by Chico Buarque, My German Brother is an autofiction, where the
events are narrated by the author himself who was called Cicco during the story, the
character's conflicts are described in a way that makes the reader feel that he is
introduced as a spectator of the actions and dialogues, because it is a book written in
the first person and it is much easier to identify with Chico/Cicco and his journey to
unravel the mystery that surrounds his family about what happened to his father during
the time he was in Germany, where a romance was lived that resulted in that German
brother and if he exists or not, the most interesting thing about the book, what makes
the reader think that it is a bibliography, are the documents and photos that are placed
in course of the facts discovered by Ciccio. This mixture of reality and fiction is
addressed in the text by Leyla Perrone-Moisés that autofiction has no obligation to
reality, it can mix a real event or what it would like to have happened or change a fact
to make it much more intense and cartoonish, seeking identification or empathy with
the reader. The Chico Buarque's book brings this feeling of curiosity, empathy and
identification throughout the narrative in search of knowing what can be real or fiction,
with investigations and dates related to Brazilian and German historical events such as
Nazism and the military dictatorship, which leads the reader to delve deeper into
history.
