PREFACE

This book contains 35 professional chord melody arrangements for solo

guitar. The selections come from some of the finest composers of the 20th
century, and are well known by musicians and singers. The book is for guitarists
who want to learn chord melody arrangements, new chords, when and how to
use them, and when and how to put bass lines within chords. You'll also learn
that just because a chord has a long name, it doesn't have to be difficult to play!

Melody, lyrics, and rhythm give a certain feel to a song, but chords have
their own personalities that can greatly affect the mood as well. Major seventh
chords are beautiful; dominant ninth chords are bluesy; minor ninth chords are
dark and soulful; diminished chords build tension; augmented chords sound
mysterious; major 6/9th chords sound bright and happy; dominant 7#9 chords
sound bold and exciting. A minor ninth chord with a major seventh or a sharp
eleventh can add drama to an ending-so can a major seventh.

Through my choice of chords I have tried to enhance the feel of a song.

For instance, I have tried to make pretty songs beautiful by using major seventh
chords. Conversely, for sad songs, I have used dramatic, brooding chords.

It is my great desire that the study of this book helps you in making
your own chord melody arrangements. When one arranges a song and makes
it one's own, it is a very satisfying feeling and gives a sense of pride and
accomplishment.

-Robert B. Yelin

DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to my first guitar teacher, Gus DeGazio, who made
me aware of the inherent beauty of the sound of guitar chords from Johnny
Smith records. This book is also dedicated to the premier guitarist, Johnny Smith,
who has no equal in revealing the beauty of the guitar. Though he was never my
teacher, his playing is the reason I play guitar. I strive for his beauty and to reap
the rewards that dedication and hard work bring. I am also very blessed to have
Gus and Johnny as two, very dear, loving friends.

Additional Lyrics
2. Now you say you're sorry
For bein' so untrue;
Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river,
I cried a river over you.

3. Now you say you love me,

Well, just to prove you do,
Come on, an' cry me a river, cry me a river,
I cried a river over you.

4. I do a hundred yards in ten flat; Bridge When first we met, how you elated me!
The Prince of Wales has copied my hat; Pet, you devastated me!
a
With queens I've la carted, Yet, now you've deflated me
But can't get started with you. Till you're my Waterloo.

5. The leading tailors follow my styles, 6. I've sold my kisses at a bazaar,

And toothpaste ads all feature my smiles; And after me they've named a cigar;
The Astorbilts I visit, But lately how I've smarted,
But say, what is it with you? 'Cause I can't get started with you.

Additional Lyrics
2. At ev'ry stop that we made,
Oh, I thought about you,
But when I pulled down the shade,
Then I really felt blue.
I peeked through the crack and looked at the track,
The one going back to you, and what did I do?
I thought about you.

Additional Lyrics
2. I've grown accustomed to her face.
She almost makes the day begin.
I've gotten used to hear her say: "Good morning," ev'ry day.
Her joys, her woes, her highs,
Her lows are second nature to me now;
Like breathing out and breathing in.
I'm very grateful she's a woman and so easy to forget.
Rather like a habit one can always break and yet,
I've grown accustomed to the trace of something in the air;
Accustomed to her face.

Additional Lyrics
2. You wandered down the lane and far away,
Leaving me a song that will not die.
Love is now the stardust of yesterday,
The music of the years gone by.

Chorus Beside a garden wall, when stars are bright,

You are in my arms.
The nightingale tells his fairy tale of paradise,
Where roses grew.
Tho' I dream in vain, in my heart it will remain:
My stardust melody, the memory of love's refrain.

2. Gone my lover's dream, lovely summer dream.
Gone and left me here to weep my tears into the stream.
Sad as I can be, hear me willow and weep for me.

Bend your branches down along the ground and cover me.
When the shadows fall, bend oh willow and weep for me.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Robert Yelin is a guitarist,
arranger, educator, and writer
who has been playing jazz
for over 40 years. His first
inspiration came from Johnny
Smith's chord-melody solos, and
it was the rich variety of guitar
chords that moved him to
arrange nearly 2,000 songs to
date. His 1982 album Night Rain was named best solo instrumental album in
Cadence magazine's critics poll. Guitar Player wrote: "Yelin's arrangements are
unique. He looks for the right chord; not the right lick. He uses alternate tunings,
harmonics, and pizzicato effects tastefully while he whips through difficult
passages with no sense of strain:' In the liner notes for Yelin's jazz trio album
Song For My Wife, Johnny Smith wrote: "Bob Yelin is an excellent jazz guitarist
and this is an excellent album. His music leaves a lasting, musical memory.'

In addition to leading the jazz guitar ensemble at the University of

Colorado, Bob Yelin has had over 3, 500 private students. For more than 20
years he has taught improvisation and chords through his correspondence
course. He was Guitar Player's contributing jazz editor from 1968-1982, and his
writings have also appeared in Frets and Just Jazz Guitar magazines. His bio can
be found in Who'sWho inEntertainmentand the highly respected book, The]azz
Guitar - It's Evolution, Players and Personalities Since 1900. He has performed
throughout the United States as a solo artist and with his jazz trio.

Fellow jazz great Gene Bertoncini may have put it best when he described
Bob Yelin and himself as "chordiologists"

Robert Yelin plays 6, 7, and 14 string Buscarino archtop guitars.
