Есть нечто парадоксальное в том, что, изучая такие далекие народы, как
занде или бали, западные историки открыли для себя символическое
измерение повседневности, все время бывшее у них под носом, но, как
заметил Г.К. Честертон (и не он один), порой стоит уехать, чтобы
отчетливей разобраться в привычном положении вещей. Столетие назад
японцы научились более высоко ценить свое культурное наследие, когда
столкнулись с западным восхищением гравюрами на дереве, театром но
и звучанием сямисена.

Фуко некогда раскритиковал историков за свойственное им «обедненное
представление о реальности», не учитывающее роль воображения. Ряд
ведущих французских историков явно откликнулся на этот вызов.
Самым заметным примером такого рода истории стал труд Жоржа Дюби
«Трехчастная модель, или Представление общества о себе самом» (1978),
где рассматриваются обстоятельства возникновения знаменитого
средневекового представления о трехчастном делении общества на тех,
кто молится, тех, кто сражается, и тех, кто работает (или пашет), — иначе
говоря, на духовное звание, дворянство и «третье сословие». Для Дюби
этот образ — не просто отражение структуры средневекового общества;
скорее, это представление, способное изменить реальность, которую оно
якобы отображает.
