The Matrix is a science fiction film movie that was produced and released in 1999. It was

directed and written by Wachowskis brothers, starring Laurence Fishburne, Keanu Reeves,

Carris Moss, Pantoliano Joe, and Weaving Hugo (Sivakumar & Rajalakshmi 2021)). The movie

explores a dystopian world in which reality is presented as an illusion. In other words, the

movie shows the view that what humanity calls truth is a simulated reality, which is not real

life (Wachowski, 2014). In the film, 'the Matrix' world is established by thinking machines

(artificial intelligence) to dominate and suppress the planet earth while the human bodies'

electrical activity and heat are utilized as a source of energy for powering the robots. The

Matrix film is an exploration of the Rene Descartes’ idea of reality and dream. Rene

Descartes was a French mathematician and philosopher who is popularly famous for his

groundbreaking philosophical quotation: I think, therefore, I am. The movie explores the

possibility idea that what we perceive as real is actually a dream and that everything we know

is an allusion (Irwin, 2014). Descartes posited that, in order to know the true truth we have to

question our beliefs and opinions. This is the reason why Neo sets out to meet with the Oracle

in order to everything about life. Neo, the hacking character in the film is given a red peel

which we can be interpreted as the emancipation from the oppression of capitalism. The

matrix as explained by the character Morpheous is a false consciousness fed to human beings

to hide how much that they are exploited, therefore preventing them from becoming

rebellious. In the film the matrix films the director is trying to depict the impact and the level

of brainwash brought about by capitalism. Capitalism at the moment is the most common

system of many nations and especially the United States of America. In the film, the human

beings are depicted as resources to be harvested by a machine dominated world which is by

itself dominant due to the advancement of artificial intelligence. The world of capitalism;

depicted as the matrix in the film there is no clear division between the virtual and the real

world. Both of these worlds are contingent, lived spaces and both of them are interconnected
having an impact on each other. Morpheus is depicted as a character who brings

enlightenment to Neo a computer hacker who was previously living a double life. During

training that Morpheus takes Neo through him refers to the system as the enemy. He points

out a number of professions, who are brainwashed by the matrix. He says that the same

people are enemies even though they are the very people that he is being trained to save. The

same people he says are supposed to be saved are not ready and that they will fight

Morpheous and Neo to protect the matrix. Morpheus prepares Neo for the fight against the

system which is controlling the minds of the world which is already in the system.
