Opportunities without an application deadline

Research grants – standard route and route for early career researchers
Arts and Humanities Research Council
The scheme supports well-defined projects enabling individual researchers to collaborate with, and
bring benefits to, other individuals and organisations through the conduct of research. Depending on
the chosen route, funding is worth between £50,000 and £1 million over a maximum of five years.

International networks
Leverhulme Trust
These enable a principal investigator based in the UK to lead a research project where its successful
completion depends on the participation of relevant overseas institutions. The network award is
normally worth up to £125,000 for a maximum of three years, though requests for higher amounts
may be made.
Society and ethics small grants

Wellcome Trust
These support small-scale research projects, scoping exercises or meetings whose subject matter
falls within the remit of the ethics and society programme. The normal maximum that can be applied
for is £5,000. If funding is intended for international meetings, or to attract international speakers,
up to £10,000 may be requested.
Collaborative research grants - São Paulo Research Foundation

These enable transnational British and Brazilian teams to apply for funding for collaborative research
projects. The overall proposal budget should not exceed £2m. Projects may last for up to 60 months.
Follow-on funding for impact and engagement scheme

This provides funding for innovative and creative engagements with new audiences and user
communities that stimulate pathways to impact. Awards will be worth up to £100,000 over a
maximum of 12 months.

Leadership fellows scheme (formerly standard fellowships)
The scheme provides salary and associated costs for periods of six to 18 months, to enable an
individual researcher to work on a specified research project or programme. Proposals for full
economic costs of between £50,000 and £250,000 are invited.
Fellowships - early career researchers

The scheme provides salary and associated costs for periods of six to 24 months, to enable an
individual researcher to work on a specified research project or programme. Proposals for full
economic costs of between £50,000 and £250,000 may be submitted.
Small grants
Enhancing Learning and Research for Humanitarian Assistance
These support organisations and individuals who are looking to identify, nurture and share
innovative solutions to the challenges facing operational agencies in the delivery of effective
humanitarian aid. Grants are worth up to £20,000.
PhD scholarships
Gerda Henkel Foundation
These support young scholars in the historical humanities, particularly within the fields of
archaeology, art History, historical Islamic Studies, history, history of Law, history of Science,
prehistory and Early History. Scholarships are tenable for two years and include a monthly award of
€1,400, a monthly endowment for scholarships abroad of €350, as well as additional funding for
family support, travel expenses and materials.
Research project grants – smaller grants

These support personnel, travel, materials and other costs up to a maximum of €15,000, for research
in the historical humanities, particularly within the fields of archaeology, art History, historical
Islamic Studies, history, history of Law, history of Science, prehistory and Early History.

Marc Fitch Fund
These provide funding towards the costs of publishing scholarly work in the fields of British and Irish
national, regional and local history, archaeology, antiquarian studies, historical geography, the
history of art and architecture, heraldry, genealogy and surname studies, archival research, artefact
conservation and the broad fields of the heritage, conservation and the historic environment.

Connected Communities Festival – call to contribute
Funding enables researchers, communities and other partners to develop a wide range of
community engagement activities, which seek to deepen or widen engagement and interaction
between academic researchers, communities and other non-academic partners linked to past or
present council-funded research. Grants are worth up to £15,000 and cover up to 80 per cent of full
economic costs.
Society awards
Wellcome Trust
These support projects that enable the public to explore biomedical science, its impact on society
and culture, its historical roots and the ethical questions that it raises. Awards are worth over
£30,000 for up to three years.
Newton fund advanced fellowships

British Academy
These enable international researchers to establish and develop collaborations with the UK with the
intention of transferring knowledge and research capabilities to advance economic development
and social welfare of the partner country. Each fellowship lasts for one to two years and provides
£37,000 per year to cover research support, travel and subsistence and training costs.
Newton mobility grants

British Academy
These enable UK universities and research institutes to host international researchers in order to
establish and develop collaborations around a specific jointly defined research project in any
discipline within humanities and social sciences. Grants are worth up to £10,000 each for one year to
cover travel and maintenance costs.
Society and ethics doctoral studentships

Wellcome Trust
These enable scholars to undertake full-time research on a topic related to the ethics and society
programme, leading to a doctoral degree at a university in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, or a low-
or middle-income country. Studentships are available for up to three years and cover the student’s
stipend, university and college fees, as well as travel, equipment and research expenses.

Economic History Society fellowships

Institute of Historical Research

Up to four one-year research fellowships in economic and social history are available to candidates
who have recently completed a doctoral degree in this field. The amount awarded is £13,590 if
affiliated to institutions outside London and £15,590 for London-based institutions.
Joint research programme – uses of the past

ERA-Net Hera
This call aims to shed new light on how European, non-European or global pasts are actively and
instrumentally used, and to what ends, always taking into account an explicit connection to past or
present debates or transformations in Europe. The total budget amounts up to €20 million. Each
proposal may receive up to €1.2m over a maximum period of three years.
Past & Present postdoctoral fellowships

These enable postdoctoral students to undertake research in any area of social history at the
institute. Up to four one-year postdoctoral research fellowships, worth approximately £20,000 each,
are available.
Pearsall fellowship in naval and maritime history

This supports a one-year postdoctoral research fellowship in naval and maritime history in the
broadest sense, anywhere in the world, from the fall of the Roman Empire in the west up to the
present day.
Fellowships for non-Dutch scholars

Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences
These enable prominent researchers and senior scholars in the humanities and social sciences to
undertake research at the institute. Fellows receive an office at the institute and a studio or family
apartment at a subsidised rate. Travel costs for relocating to the NIAS may be reimbursed, and a
stipend, worth up to €3,800 per month, may be available over a maximum period of one academic
year.
Leverhulme research centres

Leverhulme Trust
This scheme enables UK universities to conduct innovative research on any topic, with the exclusion
of research that is of direct relevance to clinicians, medical professionals or the pharmaceutical
industry. Awards are worth up to £10 million for up to 10 years.
MLA prize in US Latina and Latino, and Chicana and Chicano literary and cultural studies
Modern Language Association

This will be awarded to a member of the association for an outstanding scholarly study in any
language of Unites States Latina and Latino or Chicana and Chicano literature or culture published in
2013 or 2014. The prize consists of a cash award.

British Academy/Leverhulme small research grants

British Academy
These are available to support primary research in the humanities and social sciences. Grants are
tenable for up to two years and are worth between £500 and £10,000.
Major research fellowships in the humanities and social sciences

Leverhulme Trust
These enable well-established researchers in the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences to
devote themselves to a single research project. Fellowships are awarded for two to three years and
cover salary costs for an individual to undertake the normal duties of the fellow, as well as research
expenses worth up to £5,000 per year.
Short-term invitation fellowship programme for research in Japan

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science
This enables researchers at Japanese institutions to invite scholars from other countries to Japan.
There are two types of fellowships: short-term invitation fellowships of 14 to 60 days, which include
travel, a daily allowance of ¥18,000, research travel allowance of ¥150,000, and insurance; and
short-term S fellowships for Nobel laureates or other similarly high-level researchers, which are for
seven to 30 days and include travel, an allowance of ¥42,000 per day, research travel allowance of
¥150,000, and insurance.
Original, isn’t it?

VolkswagenStiftung – Volkswagen Foundation
This aims to encourage scholars in the humanities and cultural studies to embark on projects of
groundbreaking originality. There are no specific requirements as to what form this originality should
take. Funding ranges from €80,000 to €150,000 over one year to 18 months.
Research project grants

These support personnel, travel, materials and other costs for research in the historical humanities,
particularly within the fields of archaeology, art History, historical Islamic Studies, history, history of
Law, history of Science, prehistory and Early History. Grants include a monthly scholarship, a family
grant and a monthly endowment for scholarships abroad.

COMING SOON: AHRC/LABEX joint call for the care for the future and the pasts in the present
themes
*** The Arts and Humanities Research Council, under its care for the future theme, and the Cluster
of Excellence LABEX in France, under its pasts in the present theme, will shortly invite proposals for
their joint call. The full call details will be published on 12 March 2015 and the closing date will be 2
July 2015. The following information is subject to change. This call enables UK and French scholars to
generate new research insights, to stimulate research innovation and to add value to existing
research activities in the two countries. Between six and 10 projects are expected to be supported
for 18 to 30 months.***

Research fellowships in society and ethics

Wellcome Trust
These fellowships enable individuals who are not yet established in academic posts to undertake a
period of postdoctoral research. Fellowships are worth up to £250,000 each. They provide a salary
and research expenses, including travel and fieldwork and public engagement costs, for a period of
up to three years.

Scholars and artists in residence research fellowships

National Film and Sound Archive
These support professionals who wish to conduct research into the national audiovisual collection.
The fellowship provides for onsite accommodation and fully equipped work space in the NFSA
residence in Canberra. In addition, the fellowship offers facilitated access to the national collection,
close collaboration with curatorial and technical experts, access to the library and free access to Arc
cinema and other NFSA events. This award is in Australian research income Category 2.

Mid-career fellowships
British Academy
These allow successful applicants to obtain time freed from normal teaching and administrative
commitments to devote to the completion of a major piece of research within the humanities and
social sciences. It is expected that 35 fellowships, worth £160,000 each, will be available. The British
Academy’s contribution should represent 80 per cent of full economic costs for projects costing up
to £200,000.
Cullman Center fellowships

New York Public Library
This enables scholars and writers to access the Stephen A Schwarzman Building, formerly the
Humanities and Social Sciences Library, in order to benefit their work. Fellows receive a stipend of
US$70,000, an office, a computer, and full access to the library's physical and electronic resources

Early career award for public engagement with science

American Association for the Advancement of Science
This award recognises early career scientists and engineers who demonstrate excellence in their
contribution to public engagement with science activities. The winner will receive a monetary prize
of US$5,000 and complimentary registration and reimbursement of hotel and travel expenses to
attend the AAAS annual meeting.

American studies early-career award

Fulbright Commission
This enables an early-career UK academic or professional to undertake lecturing, research or a
combination of the two relating to American studies. One award is available for three months.
Support includes US$15,000 towards institutional fees, travel costs, accommodation and general
maintenance costs while in the US. A number of benefits, sickness and accident benefit coverage and
visa sponsorship are also included.

Scholarships
Gladstone’s Library
These are for periods of residential research using the library’s resources. Awards cover the use of
the library and the cost of residence for a period of one or two weeks.

Andrew W Mellon Foundation long-term fellowships

Folger Shakespeare Library
The purpose is to encourage access to the library's exceptional collections and to encourage ongoing
cross-disciplinary dialogue among scholars of the early modern period. Fellowships last from six to
nine months and carry stipends of US$50,000.
Research grants
Institute for Aegean Prehistory
These aim to promote knowledge of the Aegean region and to support archaeological fieldwork and
research in the area in the chronical span of the Paleolithic through to the eighth century BC. The
institute does not provide individual grants of more than US$60,000 for fieldwork or US$30,000 for
research in any year.
ESRC celebrating impact prize

Economic and Social Research Council
This recognises and rewards ESRC-funded researchers who have achieved, or are currently
achieving, outstanding economic or societal impacts through their research and collaborative

working, partnerships, engagement and knowledge exchange activities. A prize of £10,000 will be
made to the winners of each category. Second prizes are worth £5,000.
Fellowships
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
These residential fellowships support significant research and writing about the Holocaust.
Fellowship periods generally range between three and nine months. Awards include a monthly
stipend of up to US$3,500 towards living expenses and direct travel to and from Washington, DC.
Grants
Toshiba International Foundation
These support non-profit organisations wishing to undertake research and studies, organise cultural
programmes or host a symposium or seminar for the purpose of promoting international
understanding of Japan.
Stein-Arnold exploration fund

British Academy
This aims to encourage research on the antiquities, historical geography, early history or arts of
those parts of Asia which come within the sphere of the ancient civilisations of India, China and Iran,
including central Asia. The awards do not generally exceed £2,500.

JSPS postdoctoral fellowship for foreign researchers

British Academy
This scheme provides opportunities for young postdoctoral researchers from other countries to
conduct cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese
institutions. Fellowships are tenable for one to two years and provide a round-trip air ticket, a
monthly maintenance stipend of ¥362,000, a settling-in allowance of ¥200,000, a research grant of
up to ¥1.5 million per annum, and accident and sickness insurance coverage.
Collaborative doctoral partnerships

These enable non-HEI organisations or consortia with a proven track record in postgraduate research
to apply for a cohort of studentships. AHRC aims to make up to 50 PhD studentships to selected
partners every year. Awards last for three and a half years.
New generation thinkers

This enables early career researchers working in all areas of the arts and humanities to attend a
series of dedicated workshops and become Radio 3’s resident new generation thinkers. Up to 10
workshop attendees receive further media training and support from AHRC, and have their travel

and subsistence reimbursed for the Hay Festival 2015 and for the first recording of their radio
programme.
Postdoctoral fellowships in Jewish philosophical theology
Jewish Philosophical Theology Project
These support philosophical projects in the area of Jewish theology. The total budget is US$560,000
with seven to 10 awards, worth between US$40,000 and US$100,000, available for a maximum
duration of two years.
Research and travel grants

Society of Antiquaries
These support antiquarian, archaeological, art history, documentary and other research projects
focusing on material cultural heritage. Grants are worth up to £10,500.

Visiting research fellowships and scholarships

Council for British Research in the Levant
These support research in the humanities and social sciences to be undertaken in the Levant.
Fellowships are available for established scholars, early-career postdoctoral candidates and PhD or
DPhil students.
Mid-career fellowships
Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art
These offer a four-month period of research to applicants who have already produced a major
publication and are working on a subsequent research, publishing or curatorial project. Three
fellowships of £12,000 each will be awarded.
