What is the Dolby Noise Reduction (NR) System? ‘The DOLBY NA systemis anoise reduction systemdesignedto reduce tape noise causedwhenhigh requency sofiscunds are recorded. The DOLBY NF system does this by lowering the noise loorin order toincrease the dynamicroominthenigh fe- quency range above 5 KHz uring recording, the DOLBY NA encoder circuit boosts soft high frequency sounds, and then during playback the DOLBY NR decoder circuit lowers what was boosted by exactly the same amount to restore the high frequencies to thei orginal invels. At the same time, tape noise s lowered by the same amount. ‘The results reduction of up to 1068 in unwanted tape noisein the high frequencies. What is the difference between Dolby B-type and C-type NR systems? B.type: Thisis the conventional Dolby NR system. Ittoostsor, lowers the low-level signals at high frequencies oniy (more than 5 kHz) and reduces tape noise by 10 dB. Compared to Dolby B NA, it operates at lower fre- ‘quencies (Irom 500 Hz) for uniform noise reduction across more of the audible spectrum. Tapenoise is reduced by as much as 20 dB.
