Focus Group Discussion Report

Summary of Project:

Ashim Sharma, 2nd semester student of MA Psychology held a focus group discussion in
September 25th 2022 involving students from MA Psychology 2nd semester. Through the FGD,
information about TU psychology department’s current infrastructural need was gathered.

Introduction:

Ashim Sharma, 2nd semester student of MA Psychology held a focus group discussion with 7
students on September 25th 2022. He was supported by his fellow classmate, Rajan Sharma for
taking note. The focus group discussion was conducted as part of the initiative to gather the
opinion of MA Psychology student regarding the current infrastructural need of the psychology
department.

The discussion was designed to gather information from students in regard to the following
outcomes.

1. To understand what is their opinion regarding current infrastructural need of TU’s


Psychology Department.
2. To understand what is their viewpoint regarding waste management, building and overall
infrastructure.
3. To understand what is their expectations about the future of the infrastructures.

Participants Demographics:

6 students participated in this discussion: 2 male and 4 female of age group 23 to 31.

Student Perspectives:

Outcome 1: Opinion regarding current infrastructural need of TU’s Psychology Department.

Question asked: What do you feel is the current infrastructural need of the department?

Raj: I feel we need a cozier classroom.


Rajen: Even more important than a classroom, I feel the toilet should be repaired.

All Participants: Yes, the toilet needs to be repaired.

Question Asked: What exactly about toilet is it that you guys prioritize in need of repair?

Pratigya: We can start with the toilet door.

Shristi: Yes, the toilet door needs to be prioritized. And also, the water supply in the wash basins.

Aakriti: I’ve never used the department’s toilet so I do not know.

Amshu: I think we can all agree that the first priority should be the toilet lock and a close second
to be the water supply.

All participants: Agreed.

Outcome 2: Viewpoint regarding waste management, building and overall infrastructure.

Question Asked: What do you think about the waste management, the buildings and overall
infrastructure?

Rajen: It is what it is, the basics are all that matter. I am quite satisfied.

Amshu: I think the basic problems need to be resolved.

Aakriti: Basics are all that is required. We do adapt and adjust.

Question Asked: Has any other problem occurred regarding the infrastructures?

Rajen: The buildings are falling apart. But that’s a bigger concern for another time.

Raj: We do not have enough space compared to some other departments.

Rajen: Depends on the department we compare it with.

Pratigya: None that have affected us directly.


Outcome 3: Expectations about the future of the infrastructures.

Question Asked: In future, what should we do to make things better?

Rajen: On the student’s side, I think we can run campaigns as we did like the cleaning program.

Shristi: We can also campaign for better infrastructure with the Dean Office.

Amshu: I expect the basics will be fulfilled. At least the toilet door if we formally make a
request.

Raj: Yes, the basics I hope will be fulfilled.

Aakriti: Yes, the basics are the priority.

Recommendation:

As a whole, it can be seen that students who participated in focus group discussion were
unanimous with the opinion of repairing the basics. Besides that, the seemed quite content. They
also seemed happy with the recent cleaning program. Regarding things to be done in future, they
suggested to focus on the basics as well as look for a better future for the whole department.
