On January 6, 2021, supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol building in
Washington, DC, interrupting a joint session of Congress that was set to certify the electoral college
results of the 2020 US Presidential election. The rioters breached security barricades, vandalized offices,
and clashed with police, resulting in five deaths and many injuries. The event was widely condemned by
both Democrats and Republicans, as well as international leaders, for undermining the democratic
process and inciting violence.

In the aftermath of the attack, Trump was impeached for the second time by the House of
Representatives on charges of "incitement of insurrection." The Senate later acquitted him in a trial. The
event also led to increased scrutiny of social media platforms, as many of the rioters had coordinated
their actions online. Several platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, suspended or permanently
banned Trump's accounts.
