KG (KMW) came out in 1979, it was the most advanced MBT in the world at that time. It's fitted with a powerful engine and an advanced transmission, which provided Leopard 2 MBT with excellent mobility like that of Leopard 1 MBT. Its 120mm L/44 main gun from Rheinmetall became the mainstream weapon of the western third-generation MBTS. The Leopard 2 also kept the firing accuracy of German tanks. The image of its main gun holding a full beer mug without spilling any beer during driving was quite impressive. However, the Leopard 2 was not perfect. The cost of excellent mobility was its relatively weak protection. That was why U.S. military chose the XM1 Abrams tank at last. The vertical turret armor and the large opening of the ‘gunner's sight on the Leopard 2 turret were often criticized. From Leopard 2A5, the gunner’s sight has been relocated for better protection. The turret was also fitted with a wedge-shaped armor. The Leopard 2A6 received ‘a more powerful 120mm L/5S main gun and add-on armor on the top of the turret on the Leopard 26 basis to further improve protection. Unlike other contemporary tanks, the well-known Leopard 2 didn't see its first combat until 1999. The Germans gained valuable experiences from the completely different battlefields in Kosovo and Afghanistan. Shortly after the Kosovo peacekeeping operations, the Leopard 2A6M tank with improved chassis anti-mine protection was born. The Leopard 2A6M rented by the Canadian Army participated in combat operations in Afghanistan. | Germany reacted to the lessons learned in Afghanistan by cooperating with the Netherlands to develop an LIC (Low Intensity Conflicts) variant, the Leopard 2PSO-VT, based on the Leopard 2A6. And now, the most advanced Leopard 2A7 tank of German Army is exactly upgraded from the Leopard 2PSO-VT. A new APU is mounted in this brand-new variant to keep it working when its engine is stopped. It's installed with an air conditioning system in the fighting compartment to improve the environment inside the vehicle. It has optimized storage baskets on the rear of the turret. As for protection, the Leopard 2A7 has kept the wedge-shaped add-on armor on the turret originating from the Leopards 2AS, but it’s also prepared for the installation of add-on armor on both sides of the hull. When necessary, the installation of add-on armor can be done in a quick manner. It's still fitted with the powerful Rheinmetall 120mm L/55 smoothbore gun. ‘The German Army received the first Leopard 2A7 MBTs at the end of 2014, The changes in Eastern Europe in recent years have made Germany decide to increase the number of tanks in active service. According to the plans announced by the German Army, the Leopard 2 MBTs need to serve until 2030 when it will be replaced by a new generation tank.
