duikers, monkeys, and other creatures.
4. Individuals within an area born in a specific time period make up an age set. Each age group
progresses through distinct life stages. Ceremonies signal the completion of each stage. Every stage of a
person's life has its own responsibilities and significance.
5. Following Muhammad's passing, Muslims overran the northwest of the continent. Both peaceful and
coercive conversions of many people have occurred. Some African kings converted as Islam expanded
before basing their governments on Islamic law. Muslim kings frequently looked to religious academics
as government counselors because they held the belief that God's law superseded all other laws.
