Interruption-free changeover
High end MDF Distribution Blocks like Corning MDF Series 5000 are fitted with double IDC contacts allowing
interruption-free changeover jumpering e.g. during system swaps in the Central Office.
Corning high density MDF Series 1000RT has been designed for density, cost efficiency and flexibility. In
order to provide for all these aspects of added value in cabinet and central office application Corning MDF
Series 1000RT IDC strips come with high density single IDC contacts.
Interruption-free changeover jumpering e.g. of special security or performance relevant lines is supported
by easy-to-use optional accessories. Changeover plugs allow to add IDC based connectivity just during
jumpering works and thus do support avoidance of service interrupts wherever those are not allowable.
By temporarily using / applying the changeover plug only when and where it is really needed, Corning MDF
Series 1000RT can provide for extraordinary benefits especially appreciated in all space restricted applications
requiring superb cost efficiency.
The core element (functional element) of MDF Series 1000RT IDC strips are available with 8-pairs or 10-
pairs structure. Functional elements have high quality, field proven IDC contacts on the front side and internal
contacts for disconnection line protection and test access. Depending on the application there are func-
tional elements with closed internal contacts (disconnection element) or open contacts (switching element for
forced protection).
All functional elements have the same size and can flexibly be combined with wire guides userfriendly sup-
porting well structured cable and jumper connection from left or right hand side of the functional element or
from the rear respectively (for cable connection).
Fully assembled IDC strips (combination of functional element and wire guides) can be mount on a large
variety of metal structures supporting as well full blown MDF terminal blocks as MDF installations in cabinets,
Private Network applications (e.g. 19”), wall-mount distribution boxes or even MDF integrated in mechanical
closures.
8 For DDF applications Corning offers a special functional element with 4 x abs (Tip, Ring, and screen) to set
up Class D links. Again this functional element can flexibly be combined with wire guides to set up Class D
links best supporting high data rate applications in space restricted environments.
Corning Cable Systems
Technical Principles
Copper pairs based broadband services do not allow long distances to the end customer so that the installation
of active equipment in cabinets may become mandatory depending on circumstances specific to a public
network installed.
Remotely installed Digital Line Units (DLU) and Optical Network Units (ONU) support remotely installed Line
Cards and thus move powerful and flexibly adaptable access techniques in the proximity of the customer.
Corning advantageously supports the setup of MDF solutions on the cabinet level with the highly flexible MDF
Series 1000RT products well prepared to make the most out of typically restricted cabinet space.
Setup of cabinets can be further optimized by using preassembled and preconnectorized MDF Series 1000RT
products.
DLU-Shelter
The number of system or subscriber lines to be connected per distribution block depends mainly on the pair
count of the cables used. Most of the subscribers in the central office are therefore connected to the relevant
distribution blocks using 100- or 200-wire pair cables. The same applies to the system side, where 128-wire
pair cables are used.
The above described systematics is best supported by the 8- and 10-pair structured distribution blocks of
the Series 1000RT with 100, 128, 200, 384 or 512 wire pairs. As described on page 13, a distribution block
basically consists of a metal chassis with jumper combs, functional elements and wire guides. The wire guides
ensure that the wires are clearly organized in the distribution block. Each wire pair is led to the relevant IDC
contacts through the wire guides and thus help to keep movements on the wires away from the IDC area in
order to maintain long-term reliability of IDC connections.
The importance of having good wire and cable organization increases with the number of users to be
connected. The jumper comb of the distribution blocks and the jumpering loops of the distribution frames are
therefore just as important to good cable organization as the wire guides.
Jumpering
The main distribution frame (MDF) is the interface
between the subscriber cables coming in from
all directions from either outside plant or building
internal cablings in private network applications and
active line cards. The subscriber cables and the
system cables are all led and connected to the main
distribution frame. The connection between both
cable sides is implemented by jumpering.
11
The choice of the distribution frames depends on the location as well as on the number of subscribers that
have to be connected. Corning Cable Systems recommends that merely vertical distributors should be used
for less than 5,000 - 10,000 subscribers. If the number of subscribers is higher, the need for cross jumpering
increases. We therefore recommend using a vertical / horizontal distribution frame which best supports long
way cross jumpering between the horizontal distribution blocks. By comparing the option for cross jumpering
of both MDF types, the difference becomes obvious: in a distribution frame with 13 horizontals there are 12
cross jumpering options, whereas hardly any vertical distribution frame offers a third cross-jumpering area in
addition to top and bottom area of MDF frame.

Distribution Blocks
The distribution blocks consist of following components:
Overvoltage Protection
Overvoltage & Overcurrent Protection
Damage caused by overvoltage / overcurrent is one of the most common causes of malfunctions in
communication devices. Overvoltage / overcurrent can damage individual line cards or even result in the
failure of entire central offices. Without sufficient protection, telecommunication equipment is exposed to a
potentially costly and dangerous threat. Damage can be caused by lightning, electrostatic or electromagnetic
interference or by power lines coming into contact with communication lines.
Primary protection against such damage consists in inserting protection magazines into the
distribution components and in grounding the system in accordance with the relevant requirements.
Corning Cable Systems offer primary protection magazines and plugs for standard voice applications as well
as for ADSL2+ and VDSL2 applications.
In the context of telecommunications, a distinction is made between the following types of protection:
All Series 1000RT IDC Strips have a pitch of 13.8 mm incl. wire guides and thus do offer highest density. De-
pending on the application there are IDC strips with closed internal contacts which are called disconnection
elements which do offer the possibility to disconnect or to protect the circuit by inserting disconnection or
protection plugs respectively. Disconnecting elements have a white colour front part.
A different type of IDC strip has open contacts and is called switching element. A circuit is open unless a
protection plug is installed (forced protection). Switching elements can be distinguished from disconnection
elements by their blue colour front part.
Due to the diversified wire guide configuration and the different types of IDC strips customers can easily cho-
se the functional element which gives best support to their applications. Possible wire guide configurations
of IDC strips are:
- Cable wires can be guided from the left, right or rear side through wire guide channels to the upper
row of IDC contacts (cable side).
- Jumper wires can be guided from left or right side through wire guide channels to the lower row of
IDC contacts (jumper side).
Following examples explain the use of the different wire guide and functional element configurations of IDC
strips:

Application
Communications equipment and systems for voice and data transmission can be severely damaged or
even destroyed by overvoltages and the resulting current surges or by overcurrents. Protection modules
offer optimum primary protection in such cases. The surge arresters limit overvoltages quickly and safely to
uncritical levels and reliably discharge the resulting dangerous currents. Optional PTCs limit overcurrents by
increasing their resistance and thus blocking the current effectively.

Application
In general DDF (DDF = digital distribution frame) blocks are applied for the transmission of voice and data
signals for high data rate applications like mobile telephone networks, xDSL services, data networks etc.
They are used in local (MDF) or digital (DDF) central offices, mobile base stations, co-location MDFs, MDF
containers and remote cabinets.
Traditionally carriers around the world tended to use wire wrap technology on their DDF e.g. to set up 2 Mbit/s
lines. Disadvantages and bottlenecks of wire-wrap technology are known for long. Amongst these are higher
capital and operational expenditures cost e.g. due to the fact that stripping the cable is required before the
copper wire can be wrapped on a wire wrap pin by using a special pistol tool.
Corning IDC based DDF blocks provide carriers with a more cost efficient DDF product approach based
on field proven IDC technology and, in terms of the Corning DS2-Module, on a connector user-friendly
supporting pre-connectorized jumper installation.
IDC based DDF blocks offer the following benefits over wire wrap based DDF blocks:
The DDF blocks of Series 1000RT are based on shielded IDC strips to support the termination of shielded
jumper cable.
The use of shielded jumper cable is recommended for digital distribution frame blocks for high data rate
applications in order to prevent bit errors which are caused by near end crosstalk (NEXT) on adjacent jumper
wires or by external interference fields. The shielding effect of shielded jumper cable is only reliable if the
shield wire of the jumper cable is connected efficiently to an operative ground, so that induced currents can
flow to ground properly. Is the ground connection of the shield contact renounced, feedback couplings of the
shield of the shielded cable can potentially have negative impact on the transmission performance.

The termination tool C39407-A139-A12 is to be used for wiring the shielded DDF blocks of Series 1000RT.
A large selection of test cords and marking caps is available (see page 64 et sqq.).
34
DS2-Module
Besides cost efficiency over wire-wrap solutions provided by the IDC based DDF module offered by Corning
our customers looked for speeding up system swaps on DDF.
For this purpose Corning developed a jumper cable plug which allows pre-connectorizing shielded jumper
cables first and connecting these to the IDC strip much faster at a later point in time. This approach reduces
significantly off-times during system swaps as requested by majority of business customers.
The jumper cable plug is field-installable by inserting the wires into the plug’s channels and clenching the
plug so that the wires hold firmly their position. The plug is then to be inserted into the desired IDC contact
on the IDC strip.
The DS2-Module is easily mountable on the frames where the old wire-wrap modules exist. The replacement
of old modules against new ones provides the customer with convenient and quick connectorization possibi-
lity without using sophisticated tools like wire-wrap pistols.
Corning is offering support in customizing mounting rails according to customer’s demands. The design of
mounting rails can be frame specific.

Introduction
xDSL technology for today and tomorrow (ADSL, ADSL2+, VDSL, VDSL2, SHDSL, etc.) allows for data
communication (broadband service) over existing telephone lines (local loop) mostly in addition to (i.e. in
parallel with) voice service.
Private customers around the world enjoy ADSL2+/VDSL2 based broadband services like internet, video on
demand, or voice communication. At the same time carriers take advantage of DSL services to significantly
reduce the risk of blocking effects in voice switches resulting from long lasting internet sessions based on
dial in modems.
Setting up one of the above mentioned xDSL systems needs the installation of active and passive components
on both ends of the local loop (central office [CO] and customer premises [CPE]):
• Modems (DSLAMs) in central offices or in remote cabinets and modems on the customer side
(CPE modems) use frequencies higher than those used for voice communication to establish
a high speed data communication.
• Splitters on both sides of the local loop make sure that the frequency range used for the voice
communication (POTS or ISDN) is not affected by the DSL communication and vice versa.
Corning Cable Systems belongs to the leading suppliers of splitter solutions, both for splitters connected to
DSLAMs (either CO or remote cabinet) and for splitters connected to the modem at customer premises.
39
Corning Cable Systems xDSL blocks (MDF integrated DSL splitters) provide for simplified and more econo-
mical setup of DSL system by these features:
1. Just ONE additional MDF block with integrated splitters needed instead of TWO additional
MDF blocks and splitters in 19“ rack
2. Single DATA cable connected to MDF eliminating long VOICE and LINE cables
3. Only TWO additional connection points per ADSL line needed instead of SIX
4. Overall space saving in CO
5. Full control over voice service in case of line sharing
(Competitive Carrier owns DSLAM only with no access to voice signal)
Customers appreciate Corning Cable Systems MDF and DSL products both for central office and remote ca-
binet based setup of DSL systems. Corning Cable Systems supports designing and realizing of customized
MDF and DSL solutions for cabinets.
40
Standard versions of xDSL blocks support 32, 48, or 72 splitter ports. Each module of the xDSL
block provides splitter ports and related connectivity for VOICE, LINE and DSLAM. The metal chas-
sis of the xDSL block allows for flexibly adapting the port count of the product to the splitter ports nee-
ded for a given application (e.g. port count of DSLAM boards, space available in Remote Cabinet, etc.).
Corning Cable Systems MDF integrated splitter products are available for horizontal and vertical installation
and support user-friendly cable management (wire guides and jumper combs) like all Corning MDF products.
Installations based on Corning Cable Systems xDSL blocks frees up rack space that can be used to support
more customer lines or more different services.
Certified quality control during the production guarantees the highest level of product quality and a product
performance compliant with relevant standards.
A wide choice of splitter designs compliant with international standards is available. Furthermore Corning
Cable Systems has a strong experience in flexibly adapted splitter performances according to its customers’
specific needs. Please do contact our Customer Service Team for further details.

Exposure to disturbances as occurring more frequently in overhead installation of telephone lines or resulting
from questionable installations outside of the control of telephone companies can cause significant damage
in remotely installed DSLAMs.
Corning Overvoltage Protection (OVP) products do help to protect field technicians and valuable infrastruc-
ture effectively against a wide range of damages as potentially resulting from overvoltage disturbances.
For the xDSL Block 1000RT there are 4-and 8-port overvoltage protection magazines available to protect 4
LINE plus 4 VOICE connections or just 4 LINE connections against disturbance entering the cabinet from
external cable links.

IDC strips of MDF Series 1000RT are available in 8-pair and 10-pair structures and come with wire guides
attached to the IDC functional element according to our customers needs. MDF solutions using MDF Series
1000RT strips of all identical dimensions can take perfectly into account
MDF Series 1000RT inherited the support for user friendly cable management from Corning high end MDF
products. Wire guides and jumper combs are key elements of that cable management support. Whereas
wire guides are part of the IDC strip mounting structures like mounting angles and 19” rack mount frames
come with optionally closed or open jumper combs and thus complement the cabling support concept.
Corning offers a very flexible approach based on mounting angles in addition to a set of predefined products
to conveniently apply IDC strips and / or distribution blocks in e.g. 19” environment or in distribution boxes.
51
Cross-connection cabinet with IDC strips Mounting Angles with IDC strips
Mounting angles are available with a large variety of slot counts with each slot prepared to take one IDC
strip. To give an example, there are customers using the 32 slot mounting angles in order to mount up to 30
pieces of 10 pair strips of MDF Series 1000RT with one empty slot every 10 strips in order to best support
their 3x100 pairs application.
In accordance with MDF applications the open jumper comb is used to guide bundles of the 10-pair subscri-
ber or 8-pair system cable, while the closed jumper comb of the mounting angles is used to guide individual
jumper wire pairs.
In case IDC strips with wire guide for cabling from the rear are used, there is no need for the mounting angle
intended for the cable side to have any jumper comb at all. For this application mounting angles without jum-
per combs are offered.

Mounting angles can either conveniently be screwed to existing supporting structures (e.g. in street cabi-
nets). In case supporting structure is not available on site Corning is offering a variety of standard supporting
structures e.g. for standard cabinets (e.g. KVz 82 and 83) and for 19” or ETSI racks.
52 In addition to those predefined products Corning is happy to support our customers by customizing suppor-
ting structures to best support their application.

Cross-Connect Cabinet
A cross-connect cabinet (CCC) is a component in the copper access network to connect and distribute the
cables coming from the local exchange with the cables going to the subscribers. It is also called street cabinet.
The weatherproof cross-connect cabinet consists out of the housing with front door, a base plate for the cable
entry and a mounting frame or fixing structure. For Series 1000RT IDC strips there are two different mounting
frames concepts available depending on the overall number of cable pairs:
• Cabinet type “KVz 82” contains a standard mounting frame for cable terminal heads (CTH):
maximum capacity is 1600 pairs (16 x 100-pair CTH).
• Cabinet types “KVz 82a” and “KVz83” are designed to accommodate Series 1000RT mounting
angles (54 IDC strips) by means of a horizontal fixing structure provided:
maximum capacity is 2000 resp. 3000 pairs.

Cable Terminal Head
The cable terminal head (CTH) is the optimum way to install to Series1000RT IDC strips in case the cabinet
is equipped with the standard mounting frame like e.g. “KVz82”. The cable terminal head is installed in bet-
ween the five vertical metal bars of the mounting frame forming 4 bays by means of the mounting tabs of the
chassis and the mounting claws.
The Corning cable terminal head is delivered as empty chassis and can be equipped with all different S1000RT
IDC strips according to the requirement: 8- and 10-pairs, as well as 4-pair shielded.
Due to the high density of Series 1000RT 16 pieces of the CTH can be installed comprising 4 CTH per bay in
cabinet type “KVz82” and leading to a total capacity of maximum 1600 pairs per cabinet.

• Cross connection cabinets (CCC) fully loaded with traditional products can block
the roll-out of the fast broadband network
• Many neighbourhoods reject the new, large sized Multi Functional Cabinets (MFC)
• Extra space demand may result from request for co-location on street cabinet level
• For future NGN consideration space in cabinets (CCC and MFC)
will turn out to be a most precious resource
Traditional Corning MDF Series 1000RT had been designed for density and for supporting most of the valued
features known from central office focused MDF product families Series 5000 and Series 71.
New IDC strips of Series 1000RT (HD), the latest Corning invention, further reduce the space demand of IDC
based MDF solutions significantly by focusing on core product features without compromising neither on user
friendliness nor on performance, quality, or reliability.
MDF Series 1000RT (HD) allows to implement e.g. cutting-edge Cable Terminal Heads maximizing value
add for both, the purely passive cross connection cabinets as well as powered remote cabinets e.g. for cost
optimized voice or broadband provisioning.
73
MDF Series 1000RT (HD) is specifically hardened for use in outside plant installations (dielectric strength
and impulse voltage stability) and qualified for high performance broadband service based on VDSL2 using
frequencies ranging up to 30 MHz.
All IDC strips do securely connect wires with copper diameters ranging from 0.32 mm – 0.8 mm.
Due to the remarkable low pitch (height) of the IDC strips of Series 1000RT (HD) it is possible to build and
user-friendly handle a 200 pair cable terminal head at an overall height of the product of slightly less than 180
mm (pitch per strip < 9mm).
Corning´s major achievement is to provide this extraordinary density without giving up on key requirements
like user friendliness, electrical performance, quality, and reliability.
In order to comply with health and safety rules applying in the field and in order to protect valuable electronic
equipment all IDC strips of MDF Series 1000RT (HD) do support the installation of overvoltage protection.
Test cords can be used to access all signals supported by the IDC strips of MDF Series 1000RT (HD).
IDC strips of MDF Series 1000RT (HD) are available in 10-pairs and in 8-pairs form factor. Maximum flexibi-
lity for all installations is supported by the fact that 10-pairs and 8-pairs strips can generally be mount on the
same metal frame or chassis.
Like all other Corning MDF and xDSL products, the high density IDC strips of Series 1000RT (HD) can be
worked with the Corning standard termination tool.

74
Cable terminal heads do either come as field installable kits allowing the technician to connect cable pairs to
IDC strips and mount these on a metal frame (chassis) one IDC strip after the other.
An even more convenient way of terminating another cable in a street cabinet is by using so called stubbed
cable terminal heads, i.e. cable terminal heads pre-connectorized with cable stubs of specified lengths and
all connections 100% tested in factory.
By using stubbed cable terminal heads field installation can be reduced to simply connecting the open end
of the cable connected to a cable terminal head to a closure in the vicinity of the street cabinet or a cable
terminal head in another street cabinet nearby.
Stubbed cable terminal heads add value by reducing field installation times and error rates and improving
time to market e.g. for all new services set up in ways of
A transparent and durable cover is shipped with all high density Corning cable terminal heads offering effec-
tive protection against splash water and dirt particles e.g. at times when the doors of the CCC or MFC are
open for maintenance work.
