ACTIVITY NO. 1
Activity: Introduction to Literature

I. Direction: Answer the following questions.

1. What is literature? - Literature is writing that uses artistic expression and form and
is considered to have merit or be important.
2. How would you describe the literature in the Philippines? - Philippine literature is
the literature associated with the Philippines and includes the legends of
prehistory, and the colonial legacy of the Philippines. Pre-Hispanic Philippine
literature were actually epics passed on from generation to generation originally
through oral tradition.
3. What is the significance of literature to culture in tradition? - Literature allows a
person to step back in time and learn about life on Earth from the ones who
walked before us. We can gather a better understanding of culture and have a
greater appreciation of them. We learn through the ways history is recorded, in
the forms of manuscripts and through speech itself.

II. Direction: Explain the different types of literary genre.

1. Poetry - This is often considered the oldest form of literature. Poetry is a form of
literary art that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language to evoke
meanings in addition to, or in place of, prosaic ostensible meaning (ordinary
intended meaning).
2. Prose - is a form of language that possesses ordinary syntax and natural speech
rather than rhythmic structure; in which regard, along with its measurement in
sentences rather than lines, it differs from poetry.
3. Drama - Any text meant to be performed rather than read can be considered
drama. A drama is a type of narrative writing that is meant to be performed in
front of an audience. Dramas are most notably performed as plays in a theatre
though many dramas have been recreated and adapted for film, TV, or radio.
4. Non-fiction - Non-fiction is writing that gives information or describes real events,
rather than telling a story. The series will include both fiction and non-fiction.
5. Media - The newest type of literature that has been defined as a distinct genre is
media. Media is the plural form of medium. It describes any channel of
communication. This can include anything from printed paper to digital data. In
general, media refers to television, radio, newspaper, internet and other forms of
communication.
