Item 36-46
Instructions: Read the following extract carefully and ten answer Items36-46 on the basis of what is stated or

The arms of the media, which include television, radio and print, are far reaching
tentacles that fan out to impressionable young minds. So much so that many youths of
today try to emulate their favourite actors or articles.

A study on the media found that while music, television and film were important
sources of information and recreation, there was widespread public opinion on the
5 effects of content on consumers. One particular concern was the impact popular
music was having on young people.
-13-

Since 1989, other research done on youth and development has identified the building
blocks of healthy development to assist young people in growing up into caring,
responsible, productive adults. It is important to empower young people so they feel
they can be positive contributors in society. Dr. Diane Douglas of the University of
10
the West Indies stares that when talking about youth development, there are two
domains of influence-external and internal. The external domain includes the areas of
support which would come from the family, school and the community. The media,
as an extension of this domain, has become a major agent of socialization and
actually has become the new parent.

15

Douglas challenges: “I hope you, (the media), convey to the people or powers that be
who control the media, that you have in many ways adopted the parenting role, that

you have become the major agent of socialization and therein lies your
responsibility.”

20 The media appeal to individualism and as people who live in communities there may
be a misguided sense of right and wrong, and poor human relations a result of this
appeal. There is also a new-found culture of glamour which could lead to the creation
of harmful and unrealistic stereotypes.

Douglas, nevertheless, says that the media could be beneficial by producing

programming that encourages a sense of pride, power and self-esteem and which
25 portrays local, social and ethnic culture and values

The moment Aldrick stepped outside, Carnival hit him. And his heart grew big, and he felt a

practising and sewing and painting and building were flowing together in the stillness of the morning
under the eyes of women and children who had awakened from sleep dressed

thing to sell heroes, to see giants, to see gods.

And watching, fascinated by it all, as if he were with the boys’ eyes. Aldrick felt a tallness and
a pride, felt his hair rise on his head. And full of brimming with furious tears, Aldrick

one whose behalf he could dance the dragon. With a strong, piercing scream, stepped into the street, his
chains rattling, his arms out flung, his head lolling, in a slow threatening dance of the Beast, so that the
people of the Hil turned to him, recognizing him, said “Yes! Yes!

That is Dragon!”
