The Significance of Law and Ethics in Shaping Society

As a historian of the ancient world, studying the history of our ancient ancestors can

provide insights into how we can contribute to and act responsibly for the betterment of society

today. I have chosen the theme of Law/Ethics as a significant influence on an individual from the

ancient world to act responsibly and contribute to society. In this reflection, I will examine

specific examples from three different civilizations covered throughout this course to support this

theme.

The ancient civilization of Mesopotamia provides an example of how the law and ethics

influenced society. The Code of Hammurabi, dating back to 1754 BCE, was a set of laws

established by the Babylonian king Hammurabi. The code set strict rules and punishments for

various crimes, and the punishments were based on the principle of "an eye for an eye." This

code provided stability and structure to society, as individuals knew the consequences of their

actions. The establishment of this law code had far-reaching implications for the legal systems of

later civilizations. In fact, the concept of "an eye for an eye" is still used in some legal systems

today (Prince, J). The study of history can help us understand how legal systems develop, and

how they impact society. It has shown us that the concept of law is a crucial aspect of society,

and the legal system is essential to ensuring that society functions smoothly and justly.

In ancient Greece, the philosopher Aristotle wrote extensively on the topic of ethics. He

believed that a person's actions should be based on reason and virtue. His teachings focused on

the importance of developing moral virtues such as courage, honesty, and compassion. This

belief in the importance of virtue and ethics influenced society and helped to shape the moral

compass of individuals. He believed that studying ethics was essential “in order to improve our

lives, and therefore its principal concern is the nature of human well-being” (Kraut, Richard).

The study of philosophy and ethics can help us understand and analyze ethical and moral

principles in society. It has shown us that the development of moral virtues is a vital aspect of

society, and individuals who possess these virtues can help to create a better society.

In addition, the study of the history of law and ethics also reveals the intersection

between these concepts and religion. In many ancient societies, religious beliefs and practices

were intertwined with legal and ethical principles. For instance, in ancient Egypt, the concept of

Ma'at was central to their legal and ethical systems. Although Ma'at was an Egyptian goddess, it

was considered more of a concept, representing “the highest principles of justice, order, &

harmony” (). and was seen as the foundation for a just and orderly society. Similarly, in ancient

India, the concept of Dharma played a significant role in shaping the legal and ethical system.

Dharma represented duty, law, and order and was believed to be crucial for the maintenance of

societal order. The study of these societies' legal and ethical systems demonstrates the influence

of religion in shaping their values, beliefs, and practices.

Lastly, in ancient Rome, the concept of law played a significant role in shaping society.

The Twelve Tables were a set of laws established in 449 BCE that applied to all citizens. The

Tables were “the earliest attempt by the Romans to create a CODE OF LAW” (Prof. John P).

The laws addressed issues such as property, contracts, and criminal offenses. The establishment

of these laws provided a foundation for the legal system in Rome and ensured that citizens were

treated fairly and justly. The study of history can help us understand how legal systems have

evolved and how they impact society. It has shown us that the development of a just legal system

is an essential aspect of society, and individuals who respect and abide by these laws can help to

create a better society.

Understanding the history of our ancient ancestors in the context of Law/Ethics has

influenced my sense of responsibility and my role in contributing to the betterment of society. It

has made me realize the importance of having a strong legal system and ethical principles in

place to ensure a just and fair society. Furthermore, it has highlighted the significance of

developing moral virtues and principles, which can positively influence our actions and decision-

making processes. Through examining the Code of Hammurabi in Mesopotamia, Aristotle's

teachings on ethics in Ancient Greece, the principles that the Ma’at and the Dharma represented,

and the Twelve Tables in Ancient Rome, we can see how these concepts have impacted society

and influenced individuals to act responsibly and contribute towards society. Understanding the

history of our ancient ancestors in the context of Law/Ethics has helped me better understand my

role in contributing to and acting responsibly for the betterment of society. We can draw valuable

lessons from the past to inform our present and shape our future.
