Spirits ran high at the Blackall State School on Monday afternoon when the New South Wales Variety Bash stopped in to present the school with over $4000 worth of equipment. More than 100 decorated pre-1974 vehicles and over 350 costumed participants as well as a helicopter converged on the school as part of the colourful convoy travelling from Baulkam Hills, New South Wales to Buccaneer Rock, Western Australia. From the Editor

Next weekend, a large convoy of vehicles will stop in Blackall for the night as part of an important journey. The Convoy of No Confidence in the Federal Government will see vehicles

travel from across Australia to Canberra with the goal of forcing an election. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this protest, and to see the increased traffic passing through our town.

As the quote goes, Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

received have been glowing in their appreciation of this entertaining art form. The Blackall Game Meat Processing plant is working with the additional employment of seven Korean workers who have travelled to Blackall to ensure there is an adequate workforce for the plant. I know the wonderful bush hospitality always evident in our region will make sure there is a warm welcome to these young people to our town. Blackall is a very multicultural town as we already have a vibrant Filipino population who have given us a whole new perspective on attitude, food and culture, family and faith. Each will play their part as we move into the future and the Game Meat Processing plant will be critical to the ongoing prosperity and sustainability of our region. Processed under strict guidelines set down by the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service the natural product processed here is sold for human consumption to Coles stores throughout Australia. Council has made provision in the budget for the upgrade to some Blackall streets which have remained unsealed to date or have fallen into disrepair. Petunia and Dahlia Streets as well as Spring Lane will be part of the upgrade program for the coming year.

Barcoo River bridge undergoes repairs

Repairs have commenced at the flood damaged Barcoo River bridge between Blackall and Tambo, where subsidence in the foundations has caused the deck of the bridge to sag in the middle. Main Roads spokesman Eric Denham said work to settle the foundations of the bridge had been planned for 12 months and had commenced a couple of weeks ago. Weve taken traffic off the bridge as a precautionary measure, Mr Denham said. Mr Denham said Main Roads had begun work on the bridge several days ahead of schedule with the project predicted to take two to three months. The $1.2 million project is being delivered as part of Operation Queenslander under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), a joint federal and state initiative where the Federal Government provides 75 per cent of the funding, with 25 per cent from the State Government. Works will involve underpinning of piers using steel piles to stabilise the bridge, raising the bridge deck and reinstatement of the bridge wearing surface. Vehicles are being diverted onto an existing sidetrack while the works are completed, with flashing signs set up to warn drivers to give way. Bitumen was laid on lasting up to half an hour.

the

sidetrack a week ago, with the work resulting in traffic stoppages The one way bypass is also set to be expanded to be a two lane bypass to cope with the flow of traffic during repairs. At Wednesdays council meeting, it was suggested that the bridge could be re-opened for cars if water covered the bypass during early rains, whilst trucks would be unable to cross due to the bridges instability.

Producers flocked to property computer mapping workshops held at Blackall and Tambo last week. AgForce Projects technical officer Noel Brinsmead outlined what satellite imagery is freely available to producers and demonstrated how it can be uploaded into a computer mapping software program to draw and record property information and measure areas and distances. Landholders received 10 different historical Landsat satellite images of their property, ranging in years from 1988-2009, and a 2006 and 2009 SPOT5 image. The service was delivered jointly by AgForward, an initiative of AgForce within its project division, funded by the Queensland Government, and AGDATAs FarmReady approved Farm Planning and Management Module 3 workshop. Today is about learning how to map your property and then you can use it for all the purposes youve nominated: vegetation management, combatting coal seam gas issues and improving productivity, Mr Brinsmead said. Mr Brinsmead demonstrated some of Phoenix Mappings in-built software tools such as how to calculate a paddocks grazing pressure circles by using Department of Environment and Resource Managements version three landtype data, drawing in water points and using the in-built calculation function. While Mr Brinsmead said he did not promote any one mapping software package, he outlined some presently available. AgForce North regional manager Tahna Jackson attended the Blackall workshop last Tuesday 2 August, providing producers with an update on crucial policy issues. She reminded the group Coopers Creek will be officially declared a Wild River in the coming months, restricting management practices in riparian zones. She thanked Christine Campbell, who attended the workshop with her husband Simon, for her time and effort within the Wild Rivers consultation committee, and said industry involvement secured significant wins such as exempting properties with Property Maps of Assessable Vegetation (PMAVs) from management restrictions in Category X (white) areas.

Producers learn computer mapping skills

On the subject of pests, Ms Jackson said AgForce has successfully secured further funding from Australian Wool Innovation to deliver more predator control workshops, along with the Blackall/Tambo wild dog committee. Ms Jackson had also joined the RAPAD regional pest working group tasked with creating the Central West Queensland Regional Pest Management Strategy. The strategy aims to simplify regional pest eradication policies and better coordinate funding across seven shires Boulia, Diamantina, Barcoo, Winton, Longreach, Barcaldine, and BlackallTambo. I think a regional pest strategy will be really good for the region, hopefully eliminating all the anomalies that exists in different shires such as varying scalp prices, she said. Ms Jackson also said she hoped to see everyone at the AgForce site during Westech field days in Barcaldine from 13-14 September. Ms Jackson will be accompanied by AgForce Projects technical leader Graeme Bell on hand to assist with leasehold land renewals, AgForce policy officer Lauren Hewitt who will outline pending changes to leasehold land rents and Legal Aid Queensland solicitor Glen Martin and CSG project officer Daniel Phipps who can answer mining and coal seam gas questions.

Catching up at the Blackall property computer mapping workshop are (from left) AgForce North regional manager Tahna Jackson, Rhett Webb, Simon Campbell and AgForce Projects GIS technical officer Chris Fogarty.

Blackall residents take on 40 Hour Famine

A small group of Blackall residents will undertake the challenge of giving up food and modern comforts including hot showers, mobile phones and furniture when they participate in World Visions 40 Hour Famine next weekend. The challenge will coincide with the group spending a weekend at Westhill for the Uniting Churchs Sunday Night Live camp out. Participant Bonny Lawrence will give up food, her mobile phone, accessing Facebook and using furniture for the duration of the challenge. Bonny said she thought the famine would prove challenging, particularly while being on camp with other people who werent participating in the event. We wanted to do something a bit different and add something extra to make it more challenging,

Bonny said. Teenagers love their Facebook and mobiles, so we thought, why not give it up for the famine? This is the first year that any of the group have participated in the challenge, apart from Richelle Walker. Richelle said she thought the camp out provided the perfect setting for participating in the famine. Its good doing it in a group because then you know that there are others around you doing the same thing, Richelle said. The group plans to hold a carwash, hundreds boards and raffles as well as other fundraisers in the lead up to the event to raise money for the cause. The 40 Hour Famine will kick off next Friday night at 8pm, with the group sharing a camp oven dinner before starting the challenge.

LNP life membership for Sonja Public art party Blackalls Sonja Doyle received While always encouraging new by the Barcoo the Liberal National Partys highest people to take up branch positions,
honour when she was awarded honorary life membership at the partys recent annual convention. Sonja was recognised for her contribution to the National Party, serving at all levels of the organisation, and for her commitment in ensuring that the former National Party Blackall branch became an active and effective Liberal National Party branch after amalgamation. Federal Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott, who presented Sonja with her citation in Blackall last week, said the recognition was well deserved. She has always believed in the values of the LNP and she does the work, not for her own benefit, but for the wider rural Queensland community. I am delighted to see her efforts finally recognised. Sonja has been described as the driving force keeping the Blackall branch active through many difficult years. she was never prepared to see the branch lapse if she could assist by filling the void herself. She has been secretary, chairman, treasurer, chief campaign organiser, fundraiser, meeter and greeter of visitors and guests to the community, organiser of functions, and has ensured that the Blackall polling booth is always well placed and fully manned at every state and federal election for at least the last 30 years. Politicians who have benefited from Sonjas guidance include Bob Katter Snr, when Blackall was part of the federal Kennedy electorate, and former Member for Gregory, Bill Glasson. At one stage Blackall was part of the state seat of Warrego. Mr Scott said Sonja was instrumental in helping secure that seat for Neil Turner and the National Party after it had been held continuously by the ALP for 66 years.

Blackall schools have reacted positively to the recent announcement by the state government that Year 7 will become part of high school from 2015. Blackall State School principal Jason Smith said it was not an issue for the Prep-Year 12 campus as it already operated some of its Year 7 classes with specialist secondary teachers. Training is a priority for primary teachers who volunteer to move to secondary, although a lot of primary teachers coming out of uni are now trained in middle schooling and able to teach to Year 10, he said. Mr Smith added that he felt it was time Queensland matched other states. It fits in well with the Australian curriculum, he said. It gives our students the same access to specialist teachers and facilities as other states have. Catholic Educations Rockhampton diocese representatives have also welcomed the announcement. According to director Leesa Jeffcoat the move will be educationally beneficial. It needs to be made if Queensland is to maintain a world class education system, she said.

Blackall schools gear up for secondary shuffle

Miss Jeffcoat said they would closely monitor the impact of the decision on students attending Catholic primary schools in country areas where there is no local access to a Catholic secondary education. While boarding school is an option for some families, further investigation about the possibility of some flexibility of arrangements in rural areas is a priority for many families and also for Catholic Education. Another spokesman, Ross Jones said he didnt see any teachers at St Josephs, Blackall losing their jobs as a result of the changes. Year 6/7 is usually a composite class and the number of Year 7 students varies from year to year, he said. This year there are probably four or five. We may find down the track that we will need more teachers, if we get into specialised areas. Mr Jones also said Catholic Education hoped to keep enrolments up at the Prep/Year 1 level. It is something we will be monitoring carefully, he said. The state government has indicated it will set up a taskforce to look at the implications for boarding schools and students. Catholic Education is preparing to have significant input into the

taskforce, with ideas for the best ways to meet the needs of country people. We will put our views into the taskforce regarding the extra costs people face, and extra places needed at boarding schools, he said. The state president of the Isolated Childrens Parents Association, Lorraine McGinnis has said rural and remote families would face big emotional and financial burdens from having to send children to boarding school 12 months earlier. She said the move would have most impact on students enrolled in Schools of Distance Education and in small rural and remote schools from Prep to Year 7. We believe the comprehensive review should include the impact on small remote schools and also should take into account the financial assistance that families are going to need to be able to cope and live through this immense change and impact on their lives, she said.

A fitting tribute for Graham Eagle

Local stockman, the late Graham Eagle has been honoured with a photographic memorial at his former workplace, the Blackall saleyards, two years after his death in August 2009. The Peck and Gillies families arranged the tribute which consists of photos taken of Graham the year before his death by local photographer Robbie Stockwell. Grahams wife Sandra and daughter Jessica met last Friday with Jill Peck and Bev and Kevin Gillies to present the memorial to the Blackall saleyards where it will hang in the office. As well as working from the saleyards in his later years, Graham was a contract musterer, and had been breaking in horses since he was 13 and broke in his last horse the year before he died, at age 79. He also acted as an occasional caretaker at local properties for families that were away, including the Pecks and the Gillies. Jill Peck said the photographic tribute was a way of preserving the memory of a man that she described as a real gentleman and an expert horseman. He was a real identity- they just dont make them like that any more, Jill said.

We all just figured we needed to do something in his memory, she said. David Carter said Graham was a real asset to the saleyard and always had a strong work ethic. Hed be the first one through here in the morning with the lights on, David said. Grahams wife Sandra said he had accomplished a lot in his life including travelling to Hong Kong to deliver racehorses and breaking in countless horses for many owners. Horses were his passion and he rode right up until March the year that he died, Sandra said.

Jill Peck, David Carter, Jess Eagle, Sandra Eagle, Bev Gillies and Kevin Gillies gathered at the saleyard last Friday to put the memorial to Graham Eagle in its new home.

The photographs on Graham Eagles memorial were taken by Robbie Stockwell.
