Black Lives Matter

SMO
Black lives matter movement is a movement that seeks to
highlight racism, discrimination and racial inequality

Aiden Coleman
Diagnostic Frame:

The Black Lives Matter organization aims to erase white supremacy, and build
local power to rid of violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and
vigilantes.

Black lives matters main argument or goal is to highlight racism, discrimination

and inequality experienced by black people. The organization wants to address The main symbol for the
poor treatment and oppression that dates back to the era of slavery. “BBC News” movement is a raised first
representing solidarity
Motivational Frame:

● What started this movement dates back to 2013 which

was the response to the murder of a 17 year old african
american boy named Trayvon Martin.
● Primary motivations for this organization are
incidences with police brutality and racially motivated
violence against black people

The murder of George Floyd as

seen in the picture above was a
huge factor in the motivation for
the Black Lives matter SMO
Prognostic Frame

The Black Lives Matter community seeks to achieve its mission

through drawing attention to the unfair treatments by using social
media and peaceful protesting.

● This image shows protests

against police brutality and
racism.

● Most of these protests

have been peaceful (93%)
and are meant to bring
attention to the
nationwide problem of
discrimination against
black communities. “TIME”
Social Problems Marketplace:

Political opportunities: Black Lives Matter

was able to use social media as a large
political outlet enabling the activists to share
recent news and updates about the current
events going on around the country

“Researchers from the Center for Media &

Social Impact (CMSI) have found that
supporters of the activism movement used
Twitter, specifically, to share breaking news,
circulate images and engage with news
stories about corresponding protests.” PEW
Social Problems Marketplace:

● The Black Lives Matter Movement is also using schools as

a cultural or political opportunity by using the younger
generation to bring a halt to acts of discrimination or
oppression against African Americans.
● They are trying to use these schools as another way to
bring attention to the matter. Demanding to add black
history and ethnic studies to curriculums.
“Each day of the week of action highlights
two to three of the Black Lives Matter
guiding principles. In school, teachers
across the area implement Black Lives
Matter Week of Action curriculum
designed for pre-K through 12th-grade
classrooms. In the evenings, there are often
events for educators, students,
stakeholders, and community members to
actively engage in the movement.” TFC
Social Problems Marketplace:

● BLM is also using cultural opportunities as a way to

expand the support of their movement
● As seen on their main website, the BLM foundation
makes it known that in order to win over the opinions of
people they must be inclusive to everyone.

“We are a collective of liberators who believe in an inclusive

and spacious movement. We also believe that in order to win
and bring as many people with us along the way, we must
move beyond the narrow nationalism that is all too
prevalent in Black communities. We must ensure we are
building a movement that brings all of us to the front.”BLM
Strategies and tactics:

● Black Lives Matter used various social media platforms to get their movement attention.
They also include hashtag activism which is suppose to reach people more rapidly using
the tag #blacklivesmatter.
● Protests are also another strategy or tactic that they use in order to promote their cause.
Most of these protests are nonviolent used to spread the word but those opposed to the
movement are portraying the protests as violent.
Broader Social Movement:

● Racism, oppression, and violence have been societal

issues in America dating back to the slavery era. The
difficulty is in transcending societal norms that have
been set for centuries. Public attitudes regarding
police brutality and race are quickly shifting. This
movement ties into other social movements such as
marriage equality and the #MeToo Movement because
each focus on speaking out for formerly marginalized
people and communities.
“The triggers for both the CRM and BLM
were the murders of Black people, but the
rage that burst forth in sustained protest
stemmed from far deeper, systemic
injuries. For the CRM, the wound was
racial oppression based on Jim Crow; for
BLM, it is the devaluation of Black lives in

BLM new policies

Black Lives Matter has had a major impact on America

and policy makers. After the organization took off in
2020 following the events of George Floyd’s murder, the
organization started pushing for new policies that help
with the problem of discrimination and police violence.

“I think that we’ve demonstrated over time

that we have the rigor and the relationships
and the expertise to truly generate
meaningful ideas into public policy
solutions,”

Funding sources

Black Lives Matter funding comes mainly from

donations (private and corporate) and grants.

Over $25 million reinvested into the Black

community:

● Over $10 million in grants to Black-led

frontline organizations
● Over $13 million in grants to BLM
Chapters
● Nearly $3 million in grants to
Impacted Family Foundations
● $3 million of “stimi” COVID relief
funding given directly to Black people
Movement a Best Buy:

● I believe that this movement is considered a best buy because the social
problem is valid. This is made apparent in news and social media outlets as we
are still seeing acts of violence almost daily against African Americans. Tyre
Nichols’ killing by Memphis police is the most recently publicized event,
happening just a mere month and a half ago.
● The movement is also valid because it has been around for over 8 years and
counting.
● The movement is transparent by providing their supporters with a
Transparency Center on their website. The website center states, “We will
continue to unveil new initiatives to increase transparency and accountability.”
They are also supported by accurate and complete information.
BLM connection:

Black lives matter has been able to be a globally recognized SMO now. They have made a
separate organization called BLMGF which is Black lives matter global foundation. This
foundation is a political lobbying organization dedicated to continuing activist activities in the
Black Lives Matter movement.
Validity of BLM

● Black lives matter seems to be a very valid movement

with the main focus of bringing attention to acts of
violence, discrimination, oppression, and police
brutality towards african americans in the U.S.

Black lives matter is a transparent organization

that has its own specific tab in its website that
allows the supporters or outsiders to see
updates on what they are doing or where their
funds are going.
“We are embracing this moment as an
opportunity for celebration, accountability,
healing, truth-telling, and transparency. We aim
to move forward into this next chapter with the
lessons learned, achievements underscored,
and a renewed commitment to justice and
powerbuilding in service to our community.”
