CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

As emphasized by Tindal et al. (2016) and Rasinski (2014), oral reading

fluency is a key skill, which is a prerequisite for comprehension. They believe that

fluency is a skill feeds into comprehension, which is the ultimate goal of reading.

Furthermore, according to DiSalle and Rasinski (2017), 90% of

comprehension problems are due to the deficiency in oral fluency. Thus, students

who have poor reading fluency in their early stage of academic life is likely to

have problems in later academic stages.

In connection, defining oral reading fluency has been a key issue for many

educators and scholars alike. The reason for this is that oral reading fluency

involves identifying host of different aspects in a fixed time, such as the number

of: correct words, incorrect words, pauses, repetition of words or phrases and

finally mean length of utterance. Rasinski (2014)

In addition, accuracy is the ability to decode words precisely. First and

foremost, for fluent readers to read accurately, they must identify individual

words. This identification requires learning the alphabetic principle, which

involves letters and sounds. Decoding isolated words, such as sight words, high

frequency words, and irregular words is paramount. Mastering the previous

knowledge allows accurate word identification, which happens instantaneously.

Therefore, it is believed that the more errors student make in reading

accuracy, the less textual information they grasp. Hence, both accuracy and

automaticity enhance effective reading comprehension. Lahmann, Steinskrauss

& Schmid (2017)

In addition, according to Rasinski (2014), it is reported that automaticity or

accuracy alone is not sufficient to determine students’ oral reading fluency. For

instance, students might read separate words accurately and rapidly. However,

when they read a connected text, they might find it difficult to read at the same

level of accuracy and speed.

For this reason, it is essential to build and develop literacy skills in the early

stage. Thus, targeted fluency practice builds prosody and automaticity. Rasinski

et al (2016)

This research is conducted because the researchers want to know the

benefits of oral reading fluency on the comprehension of the respondents. This

study will specifically answer the question “in what ways will oral reading fluency

benefit the comprehension of senior high students?”. The general idea of this

study is what are the benefits of oral reading fluency on the comprehension of

senior high of St. Joseph High School of Dagami Inc. in the S.Y. 2022-2023.

Therefore, this study will aim to explain the very reason why senior high

students of St. Joseph High School of Dagami Inc. can use oral reading fluency

as a means to improve their comprehension. This study is conducted in the hope


to obtain information on the benefits of oral reading fluency in the comprehension

of

the respondents.

Statement of the problem

The purpose of this study is to determine the benefits of promoting oral

reading fluency on the improvement of comprehension of senior high students.

This study will particularly pursue the answers to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondent?

Scope and Delimitations

The study aims to determine the benefits of oral reading comprehension to

the comprehension of senior high students coming from St. Joseph High School

of Dagami Inc. on the S.Y. 2022-2023.

Out of seventy-one (71) students, this study will be conducted on forty (40)

randomly selected senior high students who wants to give their opinion about the

benefits of promoting oral reading fluency on their ability to comprehend

information.

Significance of the study

This study is important for the students, teachers, parents, school

administrator and future researchers for the fact that it will bring solutions to

improve comprehension.

Students. The results of this research will help students to improve their

comprehension by making use of oral reading fluency. By reading and

comprehending written material, students can better understand the structure of

language, the meaning of words, and the context of conversations.


Teachers. The results of this research will help provide more teaching methods

for teachers who wants to improve the comprehension of their students. It will

help teachers to efficiently handle different situations with their students and also

help give solutions to same problems on their comprehension

Parents. The results of this research will help raise awareness to parents who

might encounter same problems with the comprehension of their children and

hopefully initiate preventive measures for their children. This will also give

parents a solution for the related problems they are facing with their children.

School administrators. The results of this research will help give solutions for

school administrators who are encountering same problems with their students

and to help them formulate or take preventive measures for future generations by

prioritizing the oral reading fluency of students.

Future researchers. The results of this research will help future researchers

investigate the most effective ways to use make us of oral reading fluency to

improve the ability of students to comprehend information. This will also give

future researchers who encounter same problems the material they need to

synthesize solutions regarding same situations.

Ang layunin ng pag-aaral na ito ay matukoy ang mga benepisyo ng

pagtataguyod ng pasalitang pagbasa sa pagpapabuti ng pag-unawa ng mga

senior high na mag-aaral.


Ang pag-aaral na ito ay naglalayong bigyang sagot ang mga sumusunod na mga

katanungan:

Nilalayon ng pag-aaral na matukoy ang mga benepisyo ng pasalitang

pagbasang pang-unawa sa pang-unawa ng mga senior high na mag-aaral na

nagmumula sa St. Joseph High School ng Dagami Inc. sa S.Y. 2022-2023.

Ang pag-aaral na ito ay batay lamang sa apatnapung (40) randomly na

napiling mag-aaral mula sa pitongput-isa (71) na senior high students na gustong

magbigay ng kanilang opinyon tungkol sa mga benepisyo ng pagtataguyod ng

oral reading fluency sa kanilang kakayahang umunawa ng impormasyon.

Kahalagahan ng pag-aaral

Ang pag-aaral na ito ay mahalaga para sa mga mag-aaral, guro,

magulang, administrador ng paaralan at mga susunod na mananaliksik dahil ito

ay magdadala ng mga solusyon upang mas mapabuti pa ang problema natin sa

pang-unawa.

Mag-aaral. Ang mga resulta ng pananaliksik na ito ay makakatulong sa mga

mag-aaral na mapabuti ang kanilang pag-unawa sa pamamagitan ng paggamit

ng pasalitang pagbasa na katatsan. Sa pamamagitan ng pagbabasa at pag-

unawa sa mga babasahing materyal, mas mauunawaan ng mga mag-aaral ang

istruktura ng wika, ang kahulugan ng mga salita, at ang konteksto ng mga pag-

uusap.

Mga guro. Ang mga resulta ng pananaliksik na ito ay makatutulong sa

pagbibigay ng mas maraming paraan ng pagtuturo para sa mga guro na gustong

mapabuti ang pang-unawa ng kanilang mga mag-aaral. Makakatulong ito sa mga

guro na pangasiwaan ng mahusay ang iba't ibang mga sitwasyon ng kanilang


mga mag-aaral at makakatulong din ito na magbigayan ng mga solusyon ang

parehong mga problema sa kanilang pang-unawa.

Mga magulang. Ang mga resulta ng pananaliksik na ito ay makakatulong na

magpalaganap ng kamalayan sa mga magulang na maaaring makatagpo ng

parehong mga problema sa pang-unawa ng kanilang mga anak at sana ay

magpasimula ito ng mga hakbang sa pag-iwas para sa kanilang mga anak.

Magbibigay din ito ng solusyon sa mga magulang para sa mga kaugnay na

problemang kinakaharap nila sa kanilang mga anak.

Tagapangasiwa ng paaralan. Ang mga resulta ng pananaliksik na ito ay

makakatulong sa pagbibigay ng mga solusyon para sa mga tagapangasiwa ng

paaralan na nakakaranas ng parehong mga problema sa kanilang mga mag-

aaral at upang matulungan silang bumalangkas o gumawa ng mga hakbang sa

pag-iwas para sa mga susunod na henerasyon sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigay-

priyoridad sa paslitang pagbasa na katatsan ng mga mag-aaral.

Mga mananaliksik sa hinaharap. Ang mga resulta ng pananaliksik na ito ay

makatutulong sa mga susunod na mananaliksik na magsiyasat ng mas mabisang

paraan upang maging matatas ang ating bibig sa pagbasa at upang mapabuti

ang kakayahan ng mga mag-aaral na maunawaan ang impormasyon.

Mabibigayan rin nito ang mga mananaliksik sa hinaharap na makaka tagpo ng

parehong problema na kinakailangan e "synthesize" na mga solusyon tungkol sa

mga parehong mga sitwasyon.
