Future Planning

In the future I see myself being a HR compensation manager. This is a career that I have

always thought about. I’m interested in it because many of my family members are in the

accounting business and it always seemed like something I would enjoy. I started to accept the

fact that I am growing up and knew I needed to start deciding on my future career choice. I knew

I wanted to be in the accounting/business field, so I started doing some research of roles in that

field and thought about the ones I felt most comfortable and excited about and the job of HR

compensation manager is what I came up with.

HR compensation managers work on things such as researching, establishing, and

maintaining a company's pay system. As of 2019, 18,000 people were employed in the field of

compensation and benefits managers. To me I think that the job of being a HR

compensation/benefits manager is important to society because the laws, regulations and

expectations are constantly changing and the HR compensation managers have to keep up with

the times so that not only are the workers happy, but so is the company. Their jobs are also

important because they have to figure out how to compensate and keep in the budget of the

companies' wishes.

I am unsure of which high school classes can best help in this career, but if I had to take

my best guess I would have to say that the classes to focus on the most would be the math

classes. Although, for post-high school, the best way to go would be to get a bachelor's degree in

human resources, finance, or business administration. There’s no specialty specifically at WHS

for this specific career, but WHS does offer merits which has the “business” stem. I have thought

a lot about the where and what question, this refers to the college and major I would like. Now I

haven’t come up with the exact answer, but I am leaning towards a Cal State with the major of

either business/business administration or finance. The plan for after the degrees would be to

either start interning or applying to entry level positions to gain experience and move up the

chain of command. Although I am already preparing and planning, I don’t know what steps I am

missing/skipping over.

This career needs people with determination, ambition, and are hard working. Since the

needs are always changing, we need people who can keep up with the days and are determined to

keep everyone happy. I think I would be good for this job because not only do I carry these traits,

I also can keep up with the times and news. I would be able to keep the workers and their pay up

to date. I am a person who will put their mind on something and will keep working until I

complete my goal. This is useful for the career because this means I am thorough and can save

the company from any inconveniences and complaints from the employees.

According to the US bureau of labor statistics, the number of job openings for the

position of HR compensation manager is expected to be around 18,000. The pay for this position

can be as low as $69,870 and as high as $208,000 with a median salary of $122,270. Although I

do not know what positions there are to promote to a HR compensation manager, I would take a

guess that they would start in accounting, move onto HR, and so on. It is also unknown of the

benefits, but if I were to guess I would think that the position would grant more vacation and sick

days with higher pay.

I interviewed Cindy Duong, my mom, about her career since she is now in payroll. My

mom finished college with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. Although my mom did not pursue

her career in marketing. She did get a ‘temp to hire’ job at Children’s Home Society making $14

an hour fresh out of college. It has been 20 years since she was first hired at CHS. At CHS she

was an accounting clerk, but since then has moved onto the career of payroll. She was in

accounting for 10 years and payroll for the rest. My mom is currently making $31.25 an hour at

$60,938 a year.

To pursue my goal I will do my best to do good in school, get good grades to get into a

good college to then start off my career with a good and stable job. I think that this is a career

that I would really enjoy so to ensure that I can do good I will keep up with my research about

the needs for this job. I know that things change so I want to know if I would have to change

plans. This final report gave me a lot to learn with a lot of insight. Before this report I was unsure

of the classes and majors I would have to take and now I know. The path at first was unknown

and at first I didn’t even know if I would even like this career, but now that I know more about it

I think this career is really suitable for me.
