Their car had broken down, so we stopped to help them, We helped some people whose car had broken down: (their car had broken down) We use whose mostly for people: ‘Awidow is 2 wornan whose husband is dead (her husbandis dead) | met someone whose brother | went to school with, (lwentto school with his/her brother) Compare who and whose: Imetaman whe knowsyou. (he knows you) I met aman whose sister knows you. (his sister knows you) Do not confuse whose and who's. The pronunciation is the same, but who's = who is orwho has: Ihave a friend who's learning Arabic. (who's = who is) havea friend who's just started learning Arabic. (who's = who has) Ihave a friend whose sisteris learning Arabic. whom ‘Whom is possible instead of who when its the object of the verb (see Unit 938): George isa person whom | admire very much. (you can relax with them) Whom is a formal word and we do not often useit in spoken English.
