Homework 1: Doppler Shift and Line Broadening

Saturday, April 10, 2021 5:51 PM

1. An infrared light with a wavelength of λ=100nm is emitted from a

galaxy that is moving away from us with a velocity of 0.1c. What
would be the doppler shift in the line as a result?

2. What would be the doppler shift of an Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV)

line with λ=12nm?

3. The infrared emission comes from a cold hydrogen (A=1) gas with
a temperature of 100K. What would be the line broadening (in nm)
of that emission?

4. The EUV emission comes from a hot hydrogen (A=1) gas with a
temperature of 1MK (1 million K). What would be the line
broadening (in nm) of that emission?

5. Would the line broadening be a problem to measure in one of these

cases, or both?

It would be possible to measure the line broadening in both cases because the line
broadening is of a smaller order of magnitude than the Doppler shift.

6. The doppler shift due to a star’s rotation is measured. What should be

the rotation period of the star (in days) to obtain 𝛥𝜆/𝜆 = 10 ? Assume
the radius of the star is 6.96x10^8 m.
