1. How did the concept of adolescence as a distinct stage of life develop in


the United States? After the Civil War.

2. What are the main differences between adolescence and puberty? Puberty
has to do with the maturity to have sexual intercourse, adolescence has many
factors.

3. Which of the five characteristics of adolescence do you think has the


most influence on adolescent’s transition into adulthood? Why? “The
search for self”, these decisions impact for life.

4. What is the main purpose of courtship? What is the main purpose of


dating? Marriage; entertainment.

5. How did industrialization and new technology contribute to the


development of dating in the United States? It invented new ways to
communicate and has given them more freedom.

6. Which forms of technology do you think are most significant to changing


dating patterns in the United States today? The Internet and the cell phone.

7. What are the consequences of pregnancy on teen parent’s education and


lifetime earning potential? It makes in way harder, it also limits the things you
can do, and probably the plans you had had before becoming pregnant.

8. Why did the introduction of crack cocaine in the mid-1980s cause an


increase in drug-related violence? Because of the effects this drug has on
the human body.

9. How might sociologists use Durkheim’s ideas about high and low levels
of social integration to understand teenage suicide? Because could
possibly use it to predict future suicides.
