37 2. PLANNING AND DESIGN
38 ____2.1. Floor plan must be properly identified and completely labeled.
39 ____2.2. Doors, windows, fixtures, furniture, and equipment are properly laid out.
40 ____2.3. Meets prescribed functional programs:
41 ____2.3.1. Zoning Requirement:
42 ____2.3.1.1. It shall be in a secured yet accessible location for receiving
43 of specimen.
44 ____2.3.1.2. For institution-based laboratories, it shall be located zoned
45 depending on its functional requirement (second zone1).
46 ____2.3.2. Floor plan suggests unidirectional workflow process from receiving of
47 specimen to results data processing.

48 ____2.3.3. Door access from service corridor and rooms housing large equipment
49 shall have at least 1.00 meter clear width to accommodate entry and exit of
50 equipment as applicable.
51 ____2.3.4. Internal windows (e.g. viewing glass panels) are laid out to promote visual
52 observation between work rooms as applicable.
53 ____2.3.5. Provision for toilet and other amenities for laboratory staff are located
54 outside the main laboratory but easily accessible.
55 ____2.3.6. The laboratory shall have adequate space or area provided for its various
56 space/room requirements in order to attain the effective and efficient
57 operation of its activities and functions.
58 ____2.3.7. Adequate clearances intended for working space and equipment in the
59 clinical working area shall be provided to ensure efficient workflow and
60 ergonomics.
61 ____2.3.8. Provision of pass boxes to and in between rooms within the clinical work
62 area, is recommendatory, to attain appropriate workflow.
63 ____2.3.9. There shall be provision of sufficient and appropriate storage provided for
64 specimens, supplies and records.
65 ____2.4. Conforms to the applicable codes as part of normal professional practice.
66 ____2.2.1. Corridor within the laboratory, if any, has a minimum clear and
67 unobstructed width of 1.20 meters.
68 ____2.2.2. Emergency shower and eyewash, preferably hands-free, shall be provided
69 within or accessible to the laboratory.
70 ____2.2.3. Additional infrastructure requirements and engineering controls should be
71 provided depending on the conducted risk assessment and needs assessment.

73 3. Ventilation with acceptable air changes shall be maintained in the laboratory.
74 ____3.1. The pre-analysis room/s shall have a negative pressure room conditioned and its exhaust
75 must produce at least 6 air changes per hour (ach).
76 ____3.2. The analysis room shall have a negative pressure room conditioned and its exhaust must
77 produce at least 6 ach.
78 ____3.3. An internal pass box shall be provided between the pre-analysis and analysis rooms,
79 with electrical or mechanical interlocking mechanism (not required if with template
80 adding room and/or appropriate difference in ach and pressurization between the pre-
81 analysis, analysis, and reagent preparation rooms).
82 ____3.4. Exhaust shall be discharged away from the general public. Exhaust requirements must
83 be installed (e.g. bag-in bag-out high efficiency particulate air filter box) or stacked
84 exhaust, based on the risk assessment.
85 ____3.5. Supply intake location is preferably at least 7.62 meters (25 ft.) from the exhaust stack
86 and in opposite direction.
87 ____3.6. Exhaust air grille locations must be in the dirty side of the laboratory preferably on top
88 of the biosafety cabinet.
89 ____3.7. Supply air grille locations were on the clean side of the laboratory preferably near
90 entrance doors. (optional)
91 ____3.8. Supply air direction should be away from the biosafety cabinets, and other containment
92 equipment (if any).
93 ____3.9. Under no circumstances should the exhaust air from the processing rooms (pre-
94 analysis and analysis) be recirculated to other areas.
95 ____3.10. Directional airflow from clean to dirty areas is achieved.
96 ____3.11. BSC location must be away from high foot traffic area.
