Introduction

Communication is the process of sharing information and this must be simple and is sent from a
sender or encoder to a receiver or decoder. More emotions are sent in silent than verbal
communication. Gestures, body language, signs, symbols and the like are some of the examples of non
verbal communication.

Likewise, communication is giving, receiving or exchanging ideas, information, signals or

messages through appropriate media, enabling individuals or groups to persuade, to seek information,
to give information or to express emotions. This broad definition includes body-language, skills of
speaking and writing (communication theory.org).

As shown in this module, you will be engaged in learning about the aspects, types, and elements
of communication.

Time Frame: 1 week; 9 hours

Let’s Achieve These!

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

* Identify the aspects of communication

* Describe each type of communication
* Discuss the elements of communication

Module 2: Communication & You

Explain

Communication can be better understood by considering its two aspects. Here are the following:

1. The Verbal or Linguistic Aspect - this is the aspect that makes use of words. It may be oral or
written, formal or informal.

2. The Nonverbal or use Extralinguistic Aspect - this aspect does not make use of words but may
enhance or change the linguistic code. It has the following three elements:

A. Nonlinguistic elements
These are the devices used in conveying messages without entirely relying on speech or
language. There seven (7) categories that follows:

1. Kinesics - language of the body

2. Proxemics - language of space\
3. Chronemics - language of time
4. Haptics - language of touch
5. Olfactics - language of smell
6. Artefactual - language of objects
7. Physical appearance

B. Paralinguistic elements
These include the following attributes of voice that accompany the words we say.

1. Vocal quality
2. Pitch
3. Tempo
4. Volume
5. Juncture

These factors can change the form and meaning of a sentence by acting across elements or
segments of an utterance. These are treated in detail in the chapter on voice under voice variety.

C. Metalinguistic element

This is the abstract element that takes place in the mind of communicators, their
awareness of the component units of language such as sound, words, phrases and sentences. This
enables the language user to think about language independently of his or her comprehension and
production abilities, talk about it, analyze it and judge it as to correctness or appropriateness. This
linguistics intuition makes a person decide about the grammatical acceptability of the language a
person produces and receives.
Communication experts attribute general meaning to 93% nonverbal and only 7% verbal.
The exact breakdown includes:

7% - words
38% - tone and inflection
55% - facial expression, body position and gesture

Module 2: Communication & You
The human body, for all we know, particularly the face, speaks by every feature, not only by the
mouth; we know how something is meant because we see the other’s face. Thus, we convey our
thoughts and feelings more accurately than we do with words. This is because behavior is our real
language.
This implies that we have to be careful with our behavior because it considerably speaks louder
that the words we utter. Still it is better to observe consistency in what we say and in what we do.

Without communication, there is no relationship.

Without respect, there is no love.
Without trust, there is no reason to continue.

Module 2: Communication & You

Explain

Communication has five basic types as to form:

1. Intrapersonal is communication within oneself. It involves thinking, remembering and feeling, all
things we do internally.

2. Interpersonal is communication among a relatively small number of people. Much of our

communication takes place at this level.

It may be the following:

A. Dyadic is communication between two people. It may be face to face such as ordinary
conversations, dialogs, or interviews as well as telephone conversation.

B. Tryadic is communication participated by three people.

C. Small Group, there are more than three people communicating. The committee, panel,
symposium, brainstorming and small business meetings are good examples of small group
communication.

3. Public Communication involves communication between one and several other people. This is the
large group type of communication. A public speech is an example.

4. Mass Communication covers other forms of public communication. These are the printed form,
radio, television, and the movies. Mass media are the tools or materials used.

5. Organizational Communication is communication in the organization. It may be horizontal or

vertical.

We usually find ourselves engaged in these different situations to make possible the art of
communication and the transfer of meaning from one person to another.

Module 2: Communication & You

Explain

There are five (5) factors involved for communication to take place. Here are the following:

1. The Sender It is the speaker or the communicator who has his or her own purpose,
knowledge, interests, attitudes, skills and credibility.
2. The Message It is the idea being transmitted by the sender to the listener. It includes the
three aspects: content, structure, and style.
3. The Channel It is the medium or vehicle through which the message is sent. It may be
verbal or visual. The latter is often supplemented with the pictorial and aural
channels.
4. The Receiver It is the target of the communication, the destination of the message, the
listener, with his own purposes, knowledge and interest levels, attitudes and
listening skills.
5. Feedback It is the reaction given by the listener to the sender of the message. It is what
completes the communication process.

All of these elements must be present in any communication situation. There is no communication
that would take place if one element is missing.

Below shows the elements involved in the communication process.

2. Why feedback is included? As a sender of the message, what do you do when there is
a positive feedback coming from the receiver?
