WRITING THE INTRODUCTION – 4 COMMON TECHNIQUES

SAMPLE QUESTION:
Some people see urban over-development positively while others perceive it
negatively.
In your opinion, will you want to live in an urban over-developed city? Explain.

TECHNIQUE 1: ASK A QUESTION

Should I pursue my dream in a metropolitan city or live a peaceful life in the

countryside? Am I able to adapt to life in an urban over-developed city? Like most
soon-to-be fresh graduates, I am in a dilemma. If I abandon this job of my dreams for
a serene (peaceful) life in the countryside, I may never be able to live the life I have
been dreaming of. After contemplating hard, I have decided that I will live in an urban
over-developed city for my professional development. (87 words)

TECHNIQUE 2: USE A QUOTATION

“Holding true to what you believe – even in a big city – is so important.” I am inspired
by this quote from an American broadcast journalist, Gretchen Carlson. I believe that
I can pursue my dream job only when I am in an urban over-developed city. On the
other hand, I fear that I may one day break down emotionally due to the stresses of
living in an urban over-developed city. Nevertheless, for the sake of my professional
development, I will live in an urban over-developed city and not be overly concerned
about my emotional welfare. (98 words)
TECHNIQUE 3: START WITH THE OPPOSITE

As a little girl, I dream of living in the countryside. I dream of growing my own fruits
and vegetables and collecting eggs and milk from my farm. I dream of a slow-paced
life and pursuing my hobby. However, reality does not allow me to lead this laid-back
life. I have bills to pay and to make a living, just like ordinary adults. Therefore, living
in the countryside is impossible now. To survive, I will have to choose to live in an
urban over-developed city. (85 words)

TECHNIQUE 4: STARTLE / SHOCK YOUR AUDIENCE WITH STARTLING /

SHOCKING STATEMENTS / STATISTICS

According to the World Bank, over 50% of the population lives in urban areas today
worldwide. By 2045, the world’s urban population will increase by 1.5 times to a total
of 6 billion. That data is a projection of what will be happening in a little over 20
years. I wouldn’t be surprised if traffic congestion becomes a norm and grocery
shopping takes over half a day. These will become a reality, albeit a great shock for
people preparing to live in an urban over-developed city. Despite the brutal reality
that is to come, I will still choose to live in an urban over-developed city. (105 words)
