CIRCLES

OBJECTIVE:-
To construct a tangent to a circle at a point on it, when the centre of the circle is known, using
the method of paper folding.

MATERIAL REQUIRED:-
A drawing sheet, Geometry box, an adhesive, coloured pen.

PROCEDURE:-
1] Draw a circle of any suitable radius and mark it’s centre as O.
2] Join O to the given point P on the circle.
3] Produce OP to Q as shown in Figure 1.
4] Fold the drawing sheet along OQ to get a crease along the line OQ.
5] Unfold the drawing sheet and fold it again so that PQ falls along PO and fold the paper
through P. Press along the fold to get a crease along PPT-
6] Unfold the drawing sheet and mark this crease to get the line TPT- as shown in Figure 2.

OBSERVATION:-
Observe that the line TPT- is perpendicular to the line OP and OP is a radius of the circle.

RESULT:-
Since TPT- is touching the circle at P and is perpendicular to the radius though P.
Therefore, it is a required tangent.
