INTRODUCTION: Electrical connections are all around our home. Electrical
wiring connects to switches, outlets, appliances, disconnects, meters and circuit breaker. There are number of ways to make these connections that will last a lifetime! Loose connections can cause electrical wiring and devices to heat up and are potential electrical fire in the making. That’s why safe and secure connections are very important.
CONNECTION DESCRIPTION: Basic components are
1.Main switch (MCCB- Moulded Case Circuit Breaker) 2. Trip Switch (RCCB- Residual Current Circuit Breaker) 3. Circuit Breakers (CBs) In houses we have separate distribution box assigned to each house (flat) which include RCCB and CBs and in the basement. We have MCCB which connects the distribution box of each house and through that we can control the supply of electricity of the building. It is the very first component of our house which is connected to electric meter to receive the electricity from the pole. Hence the main switch is responsible for the electricity throughout the house. It can shut down the electricity if needed, i.e., thunderstorm, lightening or for wiring purpose. RCCBs are known as tripping switch because it interrupts the electricity when it exceeds the flow of the assigned current. MCB, RCCB and MCCB both are connected to live wire and neutral wire. So RCCB mainly works for the safety of people and appliances. In our house the RCCB’s rating is 32 A with voltage level 240V. The upper portion of the distribution box is MCB (Miniature circuit breaker) which is single pole This is the distribution box of our house where the upper portion switches are MCB single pole which are shorted and connected parallelly and then they are connected to the three copper bus bars in three phases. The advantage of using this is they can be manually reset without having to replace wire as in the case of the traditional fuse. The lower portion with all black wires copper bus bar is used for earthing. The red wire and yellow wire are the live wire and neutral wire which are connected to all MCBs and RCCB which in return is connected to the main distribution box in the basement. The first row starting from the left, first and second MCB switch is assigned for the compact fluorescent light (CFL) with rating 100W and fan with the rating 125 W (48 inches) for room 1. And for room 2 the right-hand side third and forth MCB switches are assigned for a 60W sodium bulb and a fan with rating 125W (48 inches) respectively. A fan with 125W will consume 30KW-35KW if it’s running for 12 hours. A CFL and sodium bulb will consume 3~4KW and 6~7KW respectively for 5hours per day. For room 3 the right-hand side sixth MCB switch is connected to the Fridge (JAMUNA Model: JR-LES634800CDF) with net capacity 348L and net weight 69kg. As it is a medium range fridge with almost 350L it will consume 250~300KW per day. There are other home appliances which can be connected to socket such as laptop with rating 30W or table fan with rating 100W will consume 6KW for 8 hours and 10KW for 4 hours respectively.
