Validation report: paint VP-R130004-62 supplied by FUCHS

1. Objective

This report aims to validate a new product supplied by FUCHS as sucker rod atmospheric
protection paint.

2. Data

Product Tested: ANTICORIT VP-R130004-62

Painting Date: 10th of August 2020

3. Validation Criteria.

1) HESA (According TSP00572/2):

- MSDS must be accepted by Tenaris HESA department.

- Flash Point required to appear in the MSDS.

2) QUALITY (According TSP00572/2):

- Product shall be oil soluble.

- Reference Film Thickness after drying: 15 – 30 µm.
- Hard drying time at 20 0C: 24 hours.
- Dripping test, Paint shall not become fluid after 24 hours at 52 0C.
- Density: 0.78 – 0.93 gr/cm3. Deviation not higher than 5% of the declared density.
- Viscosity: 27 – 120 s measured in Ford Cup 4 at 25 0C.
- Scab test: Less than 0.5% of rusted area after 14 days.

4. Conclusion.

- The product complies with all HESA requirements.

- From quality point of view, the paint does not comply with all the requirements from the
TSP00572 – Protection Paint for Sucker Rods, the samples are showing premature signs of
corrosion during the Scab test
- Due to the incompliance with the requirements from TSP 00572, the ANTICORIT VP-
R130004-62 was not validated, therefore no field trials/consumption estimation trials were
done.

Taking in consideration these conclusions, the product ANTICORIT VP-R130004-62 supplied by

Fuchs cannot be considered as homologated for Painting protection for sucker Rods in Tenaris
Silcotub Campina.

5. Evidences.

5.1. Health and Safety.

MSDS and Technical Data sheet has been checked and is according HESA requirements.
Documents can be found in RODS directory (Fuchs Documents - All Documents)

5.2. Quality.

5.2.1. Product shall be oil soluble.

The test has been made by immersion of the paint in a recipient with diesel. After 20
second can be appreciated that the product is soluble in oil.

5.2.2. Reference film Thickness after drying.

The reference film thickness after drying has been measured with a thickness meter
Qnix 4500, by the quality inspector Lazarescu Laurentiu. The calibration certificate
of the device can be found in the ICC with code 443429.

Sample No
Meas. No
1M 2M 4M 1 2 3 4

V2 [µm] 25 42 37 21 21 24 28
V3 [µm] 27 33 25 28 23 21 22
Average 29 36 36 25 22 22 24

Most of the values are within the requirements of 15-30 µm. The values that are above
these requirements will not be considered detrimental in the product validation.

5.2.3. Hard drying time at 20 0C.

The paint is dry - to be touched after approximately 6 hours.

Even though the paint got dry, when touching the samples, they have a sticky
texture.

5.2.4. Dripping Test.

The dripping test has been conducted in the laboratory of Campina by Mr. Margescu
Alexandru. The condition to do the test has been to introduce the bars in a muffle
furnace at 52°C. The samples have been suspended in a support and a white paper has
been placed in the bottom to check if there has been any drop of paint. No drops has
been detected after the test conditions.

Heating Diagram for Sample 3

There were tested several samples, as per the table below:

Heating temperature ANTICORIT VP-
Sample No TSP 00572/2
[°C] R130004-62
1 52°C 50.5°C
2 52°C 51°C
52°C
3 100°C 96°C
4 100°C 99°C

The results were good, the paint showed good behavior against high temperature,
not becoming fluid.

5.2.5. Density.

No in house test done. Values reported by the supplier = 0,90 gr/cm3, at 15°C.

5.2.6. Viscosity.

The viscosity measured by the quality inspector Lazarescu Laurentiu in a FORD CUP
4 is 18 sec at 25 0C (outside of the required parameters: 27-120 sec).

5.2.7. Scab test.

The Scab test has been performed with a solution of Sodium Chloride and water,
according ISO 11474 (30 gr/L).
The result after 5 days of exposure, in atmospheric condition and after spraying the
samples is showing a wide spread of the corrosion on the samples surface.

The process started on 12th of August:

After the 5th day, on the samples surface was noticed an accelerated process of
corrosion, which determined the failure of the ANTICORIT VP-R130004-62, in the
validation process.

Fuchs representatives were contacted regarding the sample failure. They performed
similar tests, and their results confirmed that ANTICORIT VP-R130004-62 does not
withstand corrosive environment.

Samples tested by Fuchs

Fuchs representative’s conclusion:

We found that the corrosion protection results of the new VP-62 batch are
significantly lower than our initial results. This is mainly depending on the variation
of the film thickness of the product. On the CRS panels you can see that the corrosion
starts at the top (lowest film thickness). The bottom parts of the panel show almost
no corrosion. You can also see it at the VP-78. Due to the incorporation of 10% AC
BWS 6501 B a higher film thickness was achieved. Due to this the corrosion results
improved.
Unfortunately, we haven’t tested the 1st batch of VP-62 on sucker rods. Only the batch
we sent to you was tested. These specimens show insufficient corrosions protection
too. This is mainly caused by a too low film thickness and the resulting non-closed
film. In comparison, the film thickness was higher with AC BWS 6501 on the rods, a
closed film was achieved ( -> good SST results, see table above).

During our development of the new version we tried to keep the film thickness as low
as possible. But the latest results now show that a higher film thickness is
indispensable to achieve good corrosion protection results on the sucker rods.
From our point of view, a rheological adjustment of the formulation would now be
necessary to achieve the needed film thickness. After the adjustments we would send
a new sample for testing.
